How can DTV visa holders open a bank account in Thailand if banks are now requiring a payroll account?

Feb 7, 2025
Hi everyone,

I submitted all my documents to TTB Bank on Monday to open a bank account, and today they called me, saying they can't proceed due to a new policy. They now require a Payroll Account in Thailand, which is impossible for DTV holders since we can't work here.

Has anyone successfully opened a bank account with TTB recently?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user reports difficulties opening a bank account at TTB Bank due to a new policy requiring a payroll account, which is not possible for DTV visa holders. Despite some commenters sharing successful experiences with different branches and banks, many agree that DTV holders face significant obstacles in obtaining bank accounts, often needing to use agents or navigate complicated documentation requirements. Participants discuss the perception of discrimination against DTV holders, the evolving banking policies, and suggest alternatives, showing the complexities of banking in Thailand for expats.

I went to TTB Bank last Wednesday and they showed me the requirements which I brought it with me - they needed only the contract to be translated in Thai and I did it online which is they accepted.

I submitted all the requirements and they told me that they have to forward it to the headquarters and they will call me when its approved.

Today, they called me and told me to bring my original docs - arrived to the bank and opened a bank account without any fee šŸ™

They havenā€™t been giving people on tourist visas bank accounts for years. People who ARE successful at getting one generally paid an agent, or travel all around town to every bank until one accepts them. Even my Muay Thai gym had to do the run around for its DTV members until they found one way tf inļæ¼ Ayuttuya that would issue bank accounts. Itā€™s also a fĆ¼cktƵn of paperwork and banks donā€™t want to take the time to do it.

Keep in mind this Visa is very new so no one knows wtf is going on in general, and rules and regulations are constantly changing

DTV is not eligable to open a Thai bankaccount.

You need to be on an proper long term visa ( not a tourist visa as DTV),

have had a permanent Thai adress for months,

have a long lease of apartment / house,

have some income coming in to the account steadily.

To be even considered as a customer.

Depositing a large amount (400.000 - 800.000) for visa requirement, isnā€™t even enough to be considered as a candidate for a bank account.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Donā€™t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isnā€™t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

@Henrik ****
totally false information as there isnā€™t any law that requires a certain visa type to open an account. The image you posted is one branchā€™s guidelines not a law.
Henrik *****
It is the banks that only want to have people on long term visa to be customers.

And the banks can choose which requirements, they have for being customer.

To give people new to Thailand a impression, of what they are up against, an excample of requirements is attached, as well as a link to further information on why so many are being refused to open a Thai bankaccount now.

It was only in your head, ā€œlawā€ came into play, so it is you who is totally false.

From my understanding and the posts here, Thai banks stopped opening bank accounts for DTV visas 3-4 months ago, with the exception of TTB Bank. Less-regulated countries like Thailand tend to act after learning from situations like this, and this case is one example. I also agree with the information you provided. Your document is so well written, it's hard to believe it's for the Thai banking system, and I still donā€™t believe it. I think the document applies to only one specific bank here, not all of them.

I also have a well-written, updated document. Now they've added the requirement for a payroll account, which I believe is not a well-prepared excuse.

Get an agent - DTV canā€™t open bank accounts

Which location? In another post I saw they asked for a TIN (Tax Identification Number). If you were on payroll in Thailand you would have a different visa.

I have a DTV visa. They're acting like they donā€™t know the rules, but they do. It honestly feels like a 'Computer Says No' moment.
Greg ********
Anonymous participant To be honest there are probably no rules. The Banks HQ usually give out directions and local bank managers have some leeway outside of these. My own view is banks are not doing anything until BOT (Bank of Thailand) gives direction and they probably will not.

I took this on January 20. You can see that the document was updated on January 16, and today is February 7. If they were actually following the written rules, what exactly are they following?

If that is their "new" policy then they miss out on all the non O visa holders as non of them are working either

It's also possible they just didn't want to do it. 5 days seems an extremely long time for a process that usually takes around 20 minutes

Which branch was it that denied you?

The HQ branch at TTB Bank ā€“ Phaholyothin Head Office accepted my documents, but the head office was the one that denied my bank account application. Since opening a payroll account is not possible for DTV visa holders, I believe this is a clear case of discrimination that Iā€™ve noticed in the Thai system. I first recognized this issue when people from Middle Eastern countries applied for a Thai visaā€”we all saw it, actually. Iā€™m from the edge of the Middle East and Europe, and I didnā€™t like it at all. Whether or not the bank account is approved, no foreign national should be treated differently, especially when they are granted a 5-year visa.

Now, Iā€™m looking into digital nomad visas in the Philippines and Uruguay. I advise everyone to be cautious before handing over their hard-earned $400 for a Thai visa application.
Henrik *****
Donā€™t support corruption in any way, such as using a agent, it only makes things worse.
Greg ******
Anonymous participant What discrimination? Everyone knows it's very difficult to open a bank account on a DTV due to the nature of the visa. There's no difference between you and others who have already tried. How many countries allow you to open a bank account on a tourist visa? You're getting one of the easiest and cheapest visas ever offered in Thailandā€”it's already amazing that you can benefit from it. Having a 5-year visa doesnā€™t make you a higher-status citizen; anyone can obtain it. šŸ¤”

Look, TTB Bank is the only bank providing accounts for DTV visa holders. Iā€™m pretty sure that even today, and in the future, DTV holders will still be able to open bank accounts at TTB. I shared an official document in one of my previous responsesā€”you can check it. It clearly lists the necessary documents, and itā€™s an updated version.

Does showing an official document change anything? No, it doesnā€™t! But explaining what Iā€™m going through is important. Other banks donā€™t open accounts for DTV holders at allā€”am I visiting them or complaining about them? Of course not. Iā€™m not complaining about something Iā€™m not entitled to; Iā€™m complaining about what Iā€™ve actually experienced.

So letā€™s see if other DTV holders in this group are able to open bank accounts at TTB or not. It is truly impossible for any DTV holder to open a payroll account here.
