just a quick question (nothing to do with that asked by the OP). Do you have any info on how you would proceed legally as a private English tutor, assuming you already have a visa which allows you to have a work permit? Would you just apply at the local Department of Labour? Thanks

I believe some immigration offices allow you to stay until the extension of stay expires. May give you some time to make plans and/or change the reason to being based on retirement. Best to check with your immigration office.

Yes you can. If you wish to stay in Thailand based on being married to a Thai national you must basically:

1 Have been married in Thailand, or have your overseas marriage registered in Thailand.

2 Have
*****
0 baht in a Thai bank account in your name, or have an income of
*****
baht per month.

3 Apply for a 90 day non O Visa.

4 Apply for a 12 month extension of stay (indefinitely as long as you satisfy the requirements).

There's more to each of these steps, check at your local immigration office for details.

Good luck.

Thank you, would you say certified translation is sufficient initially, or is legalization also recommended?

I'm no expert but reviews seem to say stay away from bio cam belts (timing chains are better anyway), oil pumps that drain quickly during an oil change and dual clutches. If these mechanical type of issues are important to you, speak to a good experienced mechanic as to whether any are applicable to vehicles in Thailand.
