What should tourists know about entering Thailand under recent stricter visa rules?

RE: Entering Thailand as a tourist and being denied entry

We're getting more and more reports of people either being questioned extensively at the time of entry, or directly being denied entry to Thailand.

Ever since visa exempt entries were changed from 30 days to 60 days, things seem to have been getting stricter in regards to entries. As always, your entry will be at the discretion of the immigration officer you are standing in front of.

One of the key things that seems to be a point against you will be if you applied for an extension to your 60-day entry previously. If you came to Thailand as a tourist (visa exempt or tourist visa) and then applied for a 30-day extension, and then leave and return, this is what seems to be causing issues. Maybe the immigration officers believe 90 days is enough time for you to have been a tourist?

How long you need to be out of Thailand after doing these 90 days varies, and will likely be dependent upon your history in Thailand. We've seen people who returned after 3 months and still have issues. Of course some people leave and return in the same day and encounter no issues, but there's no way for you to know how it will go for you.

If you are coming to Thailand as a tourist and have already been in Thailand within the last 6 months as a tourist, there are a few things you can do to increase your odds:

Have the 3 "proofs" that can be asked for, but usually are not. If the immigration officer wants to deny you entry, these are the 3 easiest reasons for them to do it.

1) Proof of funds (20,000 baht or equivalent in another major currency, IN CASH ONLY)

2) Proof of onward travel (a ticket out of Thailand within 60 days)

3) Proof of lodging (a hotel reservation, or proof of where you will be staying in Thailand for at least the first few days. A lease agreement is not going to be in your favor when you're trying to argue that you are just a tourist and not living in Thailand)

(The single biggest item in your favor will be if you can show them a plane ticket out of Thailand within 60 days, especially if it's back to your home country)

If you have just spent your 90 days in Thailand and want to get a new stamp, then you are recommended to use a land border bounce agency to drive you to the border and make sure you get out and back in without any issues. These typically leave very early in the morning so they can get you back home before the end of the day. For example in Bangkok, they tend to leave around 4AM. Normal costs anywhere from 4-5k baht. More and more land borders are also requiring 1 or 2 nights out of Thailand if you want to do a border bounce, and using an agent will bypass that requirement as well.

You also have the option of using a "safe entry" agent at the airport if you want to fly out and back to get a fresh stamp. These typically cost around 4-5k baht as well but the price will go up if you've been spending a lot of time in Thailand. This is not the same as Fast Track which just gets you into a faster line.

Getting a tourist visa is an option, but nowhere near a guarantee. There's not really any difference between a tourist visa and visa exempt anymore as they both give you 60 days in Thailand. The immigration officers know they are one in the same and if they think you have spent too much time in Thailand as a tourist, a tourist visa isn't likely to help.

There will be many people who want to say "I entered 14 times without any problems" or "I have NEVER been asked to show money in my 800 years of entering Thailand" but it's not relevant. Unless that person has the exact same travel history as you, and was stamped in by the exact same immigration officer that you are standing in front of, their experience is irrelevant. We are talking about trends here, and the trends show that they are getting more strict across every method of entry into Thailand.

This post won't apply to 99% of people who are coming to Thailand as actual tourists for a few weeks and then going home. But there are a lot of people trying to spend a lot of time in Thailand without a long-term visa, and they are the ones in the crosshairs currently.

TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses recent trends in Thailand's immigration policies, particularly regarding tourists entering the country. It highlights the increased scrutiny at immigration and the risks of entry denial for travelers who have extended their stay through visa exemptions or extensions. Key advice includes having proof of funds, onward travel, and accommodation ready. It also discusses options like border bounce agencies and safe entry services, emphasizing that each entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer.

I just came back thru Bangkok from US on a DTV. Hit the Priority line because I fly business class. Right thru with no issues. Another guy 2 lines over was being asked all kinds of questions. After about 5 minutes they stamped him in.

I saw him at the luggage carousel and asked him about his interaction. Seems he just got his DTV for Mual Thai but also has a ton of prior entries over the years with a handful of exanswered.

I assume that was the main issue. I have always come in on a METV or was in and out in a few weeks without an extension. I also assume he is going to be a frequent question answerer.

This guy was a little loud and the "I have a visa you have to let me in" was not a good way to handle it. If that person is on here...Good luck in the future.
Rene ******
Some people got denied extension after the first bounce when they showed a ticket on the 60th day. ("You told us you would leave")

They are looking at a commitment like a long term visa if you are planning to stay for a longer period. Otherwise as you say, just be a normal tourist.

It makes sense to the government to filter out the undecided ones.

I have issue for this reason recently... 90 days flight out to penang 4 days and come back by flight...I have money, reservation hotel and back ticket to my home after 86 days...

So I said I want to do extension...

They said they want me to go back Malaysia to get a proper visa... DTV or non o...

But after 3 hours they gave me the 60 days waiver...

I wonder what will happen next time I come in november or may be I am better wait 2026!

Has you said it will make no difference to make a tourist visa single or multiple entries?
Brandon ************

Not likely to make much of a difference. Visa exempt is a tourist entry, tourist visa is a tourist entry.

for now I have a look at DTV... Doesn't seems very easy and I am afraid that there will be many refusal there.. May be there will be new visas or regulations in the next 8 months... many tourist wants to stay for 180 days.. why not make a visa 60 days that you can extend twice or 90 days once.. many countries do thing like that...

It will make no difference how you enter, or how many entries you have had. End of the day it all depends what mood the immigration officer is in.
John ************
The reason people are getting denied entry from borderruns/bounce is that exceptions are free, different visa types are not free. So everytime someone gets repeated excemptions, its money lost for Thailand. I made a day trip to Kuala Lumpur for a fresh 60 day excemption stamp. On return i had to do a 30 min interview with the officer, and after that she called my wife to verify. I just barely avoided a denial of entry. I was told, next time i would be denied, so she urged me to obtain the correct type of visa.

My friend who is due to get his second 30 day extension mid March , he got a hard time coming in from uk in January. He was here from sept to dec last year with 30 day extension in jomtiem. We were going to get an agent to do his second 30 day extension as the immigration officer gave him a hard time and said she put a note in his file. After reading this are we right in thinking we should just get an agent to take him on a border bounce , he will be leaving on 10 April as he has ticket to uk . He intends to come back in September 2025 . Until we read this post we were going to use agent for another 30 days extension but this might look bad for him when he returns in September.

they're not all suitable. There's elements of discrimination too. Some are unreasonably or disproportionately expensive. Don't generalise. Don't judge people who are forced to use more fraught 60 day stamp option at their own risk.

@Brandon ***********
No plans for that. I think many who do that are disrespectful. If you know you will be visiting for more than 60 days, get a proper visa. If you change your mind, most won't be aware that likely they won't have anymore travel insurance as it's not supposed to be used when basically living overseas.

It’s too bad that Thailand seems intent on making it very difficult to visit over an extended period of time. Most”tourists

“Spend a lot of money “

“Work “ the system = which ruins it for legitimate long duration tourists

It's a tough situation for oil and gas workers and other on-off workers in the region that like to spend their off time in Thailand. I would say generally it will probably be okay as long as you can show proof that you have that type of work, that you don't spend "too much" time in thailand, and that you have the 3 proofs. Unfortunately it will be okay, until it isn't.

The easiest for almost everyone right now is going to be the DTV visa. 5 years of hassle free entries and every time you enter you get 180 day stamp. Easy to qualify for with some Dr appointments or registering for a class. I believe there's a FB group just for the DTV visa, but you can also search for posts about it on this group or make a post asking about it. Seems to be a lot of people getting it in Vietnam right now as they say it's not too difficult there.

here's the link for the group. The DTV is becoming a little harder to get lately, more people are being denied or given a METV instead. If you truly qualify it's easier but the embassies, depending which one you use, are asking for more and more documentation due to people abusing it with 1 appointment or not attending classes. People are also getting grilled on entry but mostly being allowed in. Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

One rectification: Safe Entry is the same as Fast Track and VIP services (if you use an agent). They are all the same but different agent use different terminology. I speak from experience, you end up in the same privilege line with the diplomat, pregnant women, handicap, children, and so on. But you skip that line as well no matter if an agent sold you a Safe Entry, Fast Track or VIP services. It's all about the same cost, and it's the same section of the airport.
THAI ******************************
Our Fast Track + Prescreening includes a pre-arrival check to ensure there are no issues with your entry and provides expedited processing.

These are separate services. Purchasing Fast Track online does not include prescreening.

Our fee for Fast Track + Prescreening ranges from 2,000 to 4,000 THB, depending on the arrival airport and other factors.
