TLDR : Answer Summary
Users are discussing a recent notification from banks in Thailand requiring account holders, including those on a DTV visa, to provide a valid tax identification number (TIN) in accordance with international banking practices. This requirement is linked to Thailand's compliance with Common Reporting Standards (CRS) and the U.S. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). Many users confirm that this is standard procedure and unrelated to the specific visa status, but a growing demand from banks to align with international regulations.

This is to ensure your taxed if you over stay your 180 days 'tax exemption' you will be double taxed in certain countries. Please read the DTV tax policy very carefully..This is not a joke.

I have Bangkok Bank. Went in last year to replace ATM card. 21 pages with 21 signatures later, I got it. More regulations and international money laundering agreements...

Could you or someone else share exactly what the bank wanted to know regarding CRS?

I assumed by having the foreign passport on file would be sufficient for the bank to forward the details to the Thai Revenue Department, which would then pass them on to the account holder's home country.

@Michael *******
Well they need a unique ID number. There are a lot of John Smiths and David Prices in the UK for example. The TIN is the unique identifier for tax authorities. Passport numbers change. I have posted above what they ask for. If you Google you can see the actual forms

Normal procedure, you’ll have to confirm if you’re a or non-American citizen.

@Daniel *******
That's also about having a TIN number. US or not.

i was asked in to update contact details but grilled on DTV details and not allowed to leave the branch. Felt like an ambush in the White House, quizzed about some transfers must be for laundering checks or tax moving forward. Go prepared and you’ll be fine. If you’ve got secrets uh oh spaghetti-o.

I'm with Krungthai but haven't received any messages about this. Or about my SIM card not matching my name. Did you get this through text message?
Sean *******
@Greg *******
I'm still tax resident in the UK I've not moved here full time yet.
Greg ********
@Sean ******
OK so just put UK as Tax Residency and your UK TIN
Greg ********
@Sean ******
I have both Bangkok Bank and Krungsri accounts and not received anything but all of my pals have. The CRS request is different from the single SIM and linked to passport requirement. That is the 17th Feb BoT rules. CRS was signed by Thailand November 2023

@Greg *******
So if I get asked I just give them my UK PAYE number?
Greg ********
@Sean ******
Yes. Country of Tax Residence UK and UK TIN. I am assuming you did not sign the UK Declaration that you are not tax resident there any more? I had to sign something in 2002 when I left but do not know what applies now.
Khun ******
Did you get your bank account open with your DTV? If so, which branch? Thank you

@Khun *****
It doesn’t matter what visa you have or which branch. It applies now to most banks (I’ve seen this at TTB, Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank, Krungsri, Krungthai), and all of them will definitely request it. If you’re a foreigner holding a Thai bank account, you’ll be required to provide a TIN or a valid reason for not having one; the visa doesn't change anything.

Anonymous participant 994 I have both a Kasokorn and Bangkok Bank accounts, both opened 10 plus years ago and I still use both accounts. I have received nothing from either banks and I use the apps almost everyday.

@Ling ****
I have accounts equally as long and use my accounts daily. The CRS agreement was signed by Thailand in 2023. Now they are getting around to implementing the practice they signed up for.

More and more people are receiving it. It's on process. Thailand has joined the CRS. If you have registered your account on a working visa, it may not be required anymore.
Ling *****
Anonymous participant 994 no, no work visa. I changed phones 2 years ago and did paper updates at my branches at that time including Bangkok bank taking my photo so I could transfer higher amounts, not sure if that had anything to do with it. I won't be back in Thailand for 2 months so I hope they won't shut me down until then.

Everyone is getting it. Nothing to worry about. Nothing to do with DTV
Michael *******
yes, u go to bank, they will give u a form to fill, because you have USD account
Greg ********
@Michael ******
It is for all foreign account holders of Thai bank accounts. Not just USD accounts. These are THB accounts
Calvin ******
Just have to go there mate and update tax details / is not a big issue
Anonymous ******************
@Calvin *****
The issue is for those trying to evade taxes and don't have any. We all know that's just a fraction of the good citizens here! 😜

Anonymous participant 994 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes, most and very soon all bank account holders will need to provide a valid tax number in order to keep the account open and if not possible, will need to provide a valid reason.
Tim *******
Anonymous participant 994 not necessarily true as you can have a bank account in thailand and not be a tax resident (hence no tin number)
Anonymous ******************
@Tim ******
As I mentioned, you can explain why not be able to provide it. This is a request from banks and people are posting about it.
Shooter *****
Anonymous participant 994 Any idea how the Thai bank will determine whether the TIN is valid or not?
Barry ******
They don't. Its on you to make that declaration.

You either give them a tax ID or you provide a reason why you don't provide one.

@Shooter ****
I’m not sure how that works, but I wouldn’t risk using a random number. Thailand is part of the CRS, and banks have the right to close an account if they detect fraud.
Ayl *********
Yes I received this message 2 days ago I’m still thinking what is it for

Standard procedure and nothing to do with your visa
Greg ********
All banks will be asking this of foreign account holders. It started earlier this year but now more banks are asking. Thailand signed up for CRS (Common Reporting Standards) in 2023. This is related to that. US Citizens have a further requirement with FATCA. For CRS it is 3 parts. 1) Country of Tax Residence 2) TIN (Tax ID Number) of that country or 3) if no TIN then why
Andi ***********
Many bank holders are receiving this as Thailand is moving in alignment with international banking standards.
