My boyfriend's father got his retirement visa stamp from Trang last year with the help of an agent. Now he lives in Bangkok and has been depositing 65,000 baht every month in a Thai bank after receiving his retirement visa.
Our question is, will it be a problem when we extend the retirement visa in Bangkok because it was initially issued elsewhere? And yes at that time, agent did help with money.
Will they extend it for him?
Thank you in advance for your answer and advice. ππ

TLDR : Answer Summary
The situation involves concerns about extending a retirement visa issued in Trang while the holder is now residing in Bangkok. Key considerations include whether immigration requires evidence of consistent financial deposits and bank statements. Discussions highlight the importance of maintaining the relevant funds in Thai banks and possible complications arising from previous reliance on an agent, which might affect the renewal process. Community members suggest checking with the local immigration office for specific requirements and emphasize the potential risks of using agents.

In Bangkok it'll be difficult. When I switched from 800k to 65k/month, they wanted every passbook and statement, and worked it to the nth degree, making sure the 800k had been correctly deposited and that the amount hadn't stopped below the required minimum, and that the 800k had stayed in the account for two months after I'd started the 65k transfers. Pretty intense process, but I'd done it all correctly. Now I'm on the 65k method, it's plain sailing for each extension.
I had no problems changing from an agent to getting my stamp at my local office once I had managed to meet all the criteria. The only thing my local office would not do is transfer my stamp to my new passport. They did not check that I had met the financial requirements for the previous year. I used a different bank account with the banked money which showed it had been there for three months prior to application. That was good enough. I'm not saying that this would be the case at every office.

I live in bangkok and 3 years ago when I moved from Pattaya to Bangkok I used a well known agent in Bangkok to do the changes for my visa as at the time I was unwell. The visa was issued in Trang even though my property was registered in Bangkok. I had the money in the bank and gave the agent all the statements etc when she renewed my visa. When I went to renew it myself last year in person in Bangkok the visa was declined due to me using an agent in the past. I had to go back to the agent and pay the agency fee to renew my visa. Be warned hopefully it will not happen to you
yes they declined me in person when I went so I went back to the same agent and she got the visa no problem but with a Trang stamp as before even though I live and am registered in Bangkok complete my 90 days with my Bangkok address and have the 800k locked in my bank account, if they do decline your application I can give to the agent that handles mine but it may be the same one you are already using
not at all, it's an old wives tale about being stuck with an agent. What you will need to do is talk it over with the immigration office you intend to use. Koh Samui was very willing to assist me with transition. And also was able to obtain LTR in spite of using an agent the preceding years.
unfortunately in my case it seems so though you can always check in a hotel in Jomtien for a few nights get the TM 30 from the hotel and apply in person at the Pattaya / Jomtien immigration office who are a lot more sympathetic shall we say but I am not sure if it is cost effective
not so sympathetic. We had to use an agent despite having the 800k in the bank. They would NOT accept our 1 year lease documents because the owner was a foreigner. Kept asking for more paperwork on top of TM 30 (letter from juristic office of condo, leasing agent doc, foreigner docs, etc.) Which we provided, but we realized it was going to always be NO until we used an agent.
The next year, extension by ourself was easy. Just proof of lease, and bank proof, standard stuff. So only the first year was the BIG problem. Maybe if you own your place it's easier.
His problem is going to be with the fact he used an agent and that agent supplied the money for the extension he's currently on. You also imply there was a week after he got the extension where the 800k baht wasn't in his bank account. There are a number of potential issues here
1. He did not honour the terms of the extension he's currently on regarding money so will be unlikely to get a new extension
2. Depending on just how the agent obtained the visa and extension other immigration offices may not want to touch it
There's 2 options as I see it
1. Go back and use the same agent again
2. Go out of Thailand without a re-entry permit to cancel his current extension. Come back on a tourist stamp and start over with a 90 day non-o visa then a 12 month extension but doing it himself without an agent
The problem with using agents is you can be stuck using them for ever
thank you so much, I really appreciate your opinion. Yes, we do not want to stuck with agent again. Yes going out of Thailand is the best option i guess. To make sure we do everything right.
please be aware that many (most?) Thai immigration offices require retirees converting a visa exempt or tourist visa to a 3 month Non O have THB 800,000 in the bank and will not accept 12 months of international transfers of THB 65,000 for the conversion.
Immigration wii accept the 12 months of THB 65,000 deposit, but they will not accept for the initial Non O. I use Chaeng Wattana and got caught out by this.
My understanding was that you cannot use the 65k income option when applying for your first non-o when you applying in-country.. meaning in person in Thailand.. but can switch to it after a year when you are applying for your first extension.. in effect your second year non-o.. so must have the required capital balance in a thai bank account.. and if I'm correct and the individual is leaving Thailand to re-enter and begin a new process then they cannot use the income option.. will await clarification from better informed people here π
before that go to the bangkok immigration office and ask for the handouts for both the 90 day non-o based on retirement and the 12 month extension to that and make sure that he satisfies all the requirements
you can actually skip one step by getting the non-o visa at a Thai embassy while outside of Thailand. If he can't show the 800k baht came from overseas it may even be necessary
I see. If he applies for a non-O 90-day visa at a Thai Embassy outside Thailand, his proof of financial support must come from an outside source? Cannot use a Thai bank statement to support it?
How about if this year he uses an agent in Bangkok to get an extension stamp at Bangkok Office? In future years, he can extend it himself in Bangkok because he now has an address and 800,000 THB in a Thai bank. He does not intend to touch it, so in 2025, when he applies for an extension, he can show that he got the stamp from the Bangkok office in 2024 and that his financial requirements are met. His financial requirement will likely have been in the bank for almost 2 years.
it depends on how the agent goes about it I'd say. Many of the agents use out of province stamps as it's easier to obtain under the counter, and then nothing would have changed. It's not easy to get off the agent gravy train.
John Stanners a friend in Bangkok had this happen (with out of Province office). It really caught them off guard at renewal time and screwed things up for them.
I believe it can be any bank, including Thai banks.

The only problem that I can see is immigrations may want to see the original bank account to verify the account never fell below THB 400,000.

Make sure that 65k Baht is being deposited as an international wire transfer, I don't think deposting locally is acceptable. To prevent money laundering, I believe that the wire transfer has to indicate some sort of institution, retirerment fund, etc. At least what institution or organization it's coming from.
In order to switch over he will need bank statements from every month last year showing that the bt800,000 was in his account for at least 3 months after he got his extension, and then that the balance never dropped below bt400,000 for the rest of the year. Without bank statements showing this they will not extend his extension, as he won't be able to prove be met the requirements for the last year. This is the main problem with using an agent when you never had the bt800,000.
He did transfer 800,000 baht to Thai Bank Account after 1 week he got a retirement visa by agent and also did transfer 65,000 baht every month. But we just afraid that the 800,000 come later one week after, never drop never withdraw.
in this situation he will not get an extension without an agent, as they will check one year of transactions. Moreover even if he had done everything correctly he should have deposited the 800k two months before and three months after then the balance should not have dropped below 400k excluding the 65k. Switching method is extremely complex.

Maybe you never know if his tm30 is from Bangkok it should help but people have had problems switching from an agent to doing it yourself
