TLDR : Answer Summary
The community discusses the importance of the 90-day reporting requirement for visa holders in Thailand and the consequences of overstaying. Users suggest that if you have missed the reporting deadline, it might be best to leave Thailand before the end of your six-month stay to reset the clock. It's recommended to go to the immigration office as soon as possible to explain the situation, as fines for overstaying can accumulate quickly at 500 THB per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 THB. Opinions vary on whether it's necessary to visit immigration if planning a border run, as some suggest you avoid the fine if you leave the country.

So with the DTV visa that allows you to stay 6 months, you have to go to immigration every 90 days regardless?

If I remember correctly, you have a seven day grace period for the 90 day reporting, where you pay no fine. After that, the fine is àžż2000 and that is regardless of how long you have failed to report.

In most cases, you need to do your first 90 day reporting in person (no cost if before or within the grace period) and subsequent reporting can be done online.

yes, i know it doesnt make sense but everyone regardless of visa type needs to report every 90 days

why doesn’t that make sense? When you’re on the “retirement visa extension” you’re allowed to stay 365 days and still need to do 90 day reporting.

It is a method for the immigration to know where the foreign base lives at any time.

During the pandemic, this was used several time to alert foreigners that they had been in a location where COVID had been known to transmit between people.

I assume the also want to know where we are in case there is any number of other incidences (such as complaints about our behavior, etc.)

can you just pay an immigration officer?

2000 baht fine, that’s all

Unless you need to visit immigration for some reason don’t worry about it this time. When you go do a border run it’ll reset. If you go to immigration you’ll be fined 2k.

But they will know when he left the country, so they can easily figure out that he didn't report after 90 days?

the airport immigration aren’t concerned with 90day reports. They don’t check for it, and once you’ve re-entered it’s reset, it’s not an issue. That being said, I do do my 90 day reports, just to save any potential issues.

So basically we won't be fined if we aren't caught and if we leave the country after 180 days then come back again it'll reset?

Suggest you to simply just leave Thailand before the 6 month stay finish and then return. Then do the next 90 days report counting from the day you will arrive in Thailand again.

You have to report normaly every 90days at immigration office. If you've overstayed, you're looking at a fine of 500thb per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 thb. Go to an immigration office ASAP, explain your situation, and consider getting legal advice to handle this. 🙏

It is not an overstay! 90-day report failure is 2000 baht a year fine and does not affect your visa

He isn't talking overstay. He's talking about the 90 day report. The fine isnt as brutal as overstay.
