What are the best options for banking as a foreigner on a DTV visa in Thailand?

Hello everyone. I see a lot of people asking about a bank account in Thailand.

If you are on a DTV visa it can be difficult to get a bank account.

I have been using an app called deep pocket and have had no issues.

You can pay rent with it. Any place that has a QR code option you can pay.

You can transfer to most Thai banks.

I think this can be useful for some people.

Edit. I forgot to mention you get a Thai card which is useful for online purchases. Thai netflix or other similar services.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Expats on a DTV visa may face challenges opening a traditional bank account in Thailand. Users share tools like the Deep Pocket app for managing payments, which allows transactions with QR codes and offers a physical Thai card for online purchases. Alternatives like TrueMoney and Moreta Pay are also noted for managing funds and payments. Contributors highlight the need for a stable residency and consistent income to meet banks' requirements, as well as tips for topping up accounts through retail shops.

There’s another app called Moreta Pay which allows you to deposit money and then pay via QR.

The only thing to note is that it only works with vendors who are using a business bank account and there are many vendors who still use personal accounts (even when it’s a big business, like a major hotel). Moreta said they’re working to change this; their support team was really helpful and responsive when I messaged them to figure out why it wasn’t working at some vendors.

But it has come in handy for me. I read up on them as a startup and I think it’s a great option/solution!

Here’s the link for iPhone users. (May be avail for android too but I wouldn’t know.) 🤓

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

Just get a bank account, easy enough, if you struggle then just pay an agent, well worth it if you're going to be here long term

@Mac ******
what sort of Agent I have to find ?
Mac *******
I live in Pattaya so I only know this area, any visa agent basically will be able to help you, I know ones in pattaya that can but you can also do it on your own

I got approved also, but I am not sure how to load the card. Is the only way to load it using cash, or is it possible to use wise or some other digital funding method?

@Cia***

Dany ********
@Anne **********
only downside is that you cannot pay to bank accounts :(
Karl *********
@Dany *******
you can transfer to Thai bank accounts for a 20b fee but you can’t QR pay unless you’re a Thai citizen

@Karl ********
You cannot do QR pay? Not even to a shop? Then it’a not very useful…
Karl *********
@Lor ******
but I did just download Deeppocket which someone else suggested, uploaded a selfie and my passport. I was approved pretty much straight away … I have just paid for my first time using QR in store. Great!

It’s very similar to TrueMoney but you can actually use it

I just read the long review in the link that you provided.

There will always be people who have problems on any banking platform. I have been using the app for 6 months now. Never had anything negative happen.
Re-Angelo ********
What about a revolut card in thailand wouldn’t that be an option?
Marta *************
@Re-Angelo *******
they charge you around 3% to pay with it

yes you can use this card here for withdrawals at ATM. As far as using it for payments. Only in hotels probably.

@Wil****
it works payment as well, no issues. I also don’t think that is difficult to get bank account - I think it depends on areas where you live. Also can use true money wallet as well. Several possibilities - if you don’t get account in some bank, try another branch or office.

Yes I have used BigC several times. They take a small fee. You can also give cash to any Thai person to top up the account.
Cristiano ********
I've seen we can top up through retail shops, like BigC or Lotus, is this working?Any experience?
