Can I get a 60-day visa exemption upon arrival in Thailand, extend it, and then do a border run to Laos or fly to Bali to get more visa days?

When i arrive at DMK next week and get a 60 day VOA and extend another 30. Can I do a border run say to Laos by land crossing, stay a few weeks for sightseeing then return to Thailand and get another 60 days VOA and extend another 30 days.

Fly to Bali and back to Thailand and get another 60 days plus 30 or is that pushing it?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the feasibility of using a 60-day Visa Exempt status obtained at DMK airport, then extending it by 30 days, followed by a border run to Laos for more sightseeing. They consider returning to Thailand to claim another 60 days and another 30-day extension or flying to Bali and back for the same purpose. Community comments clarify the distinction between visa on arrival and visa exempt statuses, caution against suspicious behavior after multiple extensions, and recommend obtaining a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) as a more secure option for extended stays.

Maybe. There are no guarantees. Have a ‘plan B’ just in case.

3 visa extensions will cost you 170 USD. Buy a multiple entry visa for 180 USD and travel with peace of mind.

still he needs the extensions if I understood well

with an METV you don’t need to do extensions if you don’t want to. At the end of each 60 day entry you can border bounce to get another 60 days. If it’s more convenient then once each entry you can buy one extension of 30 days.

Either way with one final extension you can milk almost 9 months off a METV.

If you want to stay almost 9 months in Thailand why didn't you get the correct Visa, a Multi Entry Tourist Visa? The days of doing what you plan came to an end last July when the Visa Exempt whent to 60 days which you, like many previously, will discover.

can i apply a multi tourist visa in Thailand or i have to apply in this case in the Netherlands?

@Rini ********
No. you can only apply for the multiple entry tourist visa from your home country or country of legal residence.

METV can ONLY be obtained in your home country. You can't apply for any tourist visa in Thailand, that wouldn't make sense.

I don't think so.

First of all it's not visa on arrival, which is only 15 days that you apply for and pay for at the airport. You're talking about visa exempt.

And you're likely to encounter issues after 2 maxxed out visa exempt. At that point you'll have already spent 6 months in Thailand. If you were an immigration officer you don't think it would be suspicious and that this person doesn't seem like a tourist after that long?

i should have chosen my words more carefully. I meant visa exempt which being from Australia is 60 days "visa exempt " plus another 30 days 1800baht or whatever the price is payable at either Changwathana or IT square.

Im not an Immigration officer so I wouldn't know if he were to be suspicious or not.

Guess I should have asked the question a bit more in detail to avoid PC. I'm only asking if others have been able to do it or not.

Me thinks twice about asking questions on a group designed for these questions geez !

the biggest mistake you are making with your plan is getting the 30 day extension every time. That is not a pattern a real tourist uses. That is a pattern someone trying to stay long term in Thailand as a tourist used. Lots of actual tourists base out of Bangkok when they visit other countries in South East Asia. They do not get the 30 day extensions, and they do not always cross at the same location. After the first time you cross and come back, after having gotten the 30 day extension, you have a high probability of being stopped and questioned about what you are doing. After the second time entry can be refused until you get the proper long term visa. Buying a tourist visa does not guarantee being let into the country if they know you are trying to stay long term as a tourist. If you follow a pattern of an actual tourist you can stay here for years, but if you don't by getting the 30 day extension each time you can, you will be refused entry very fast, no matter how you cross and return.

Extensions are 1900 baht cash.

Terminology is very important when it comes to these matters as the answers are completely different based on the entry method. But since they increased visa exempt to 60 days, the immigration officers have become MUCH more strict, and many people are encountering issues just coming back after 90 days. You are talking about coming back after 180 days, so your plan is not very good. Tourists don't spend 6 months, with trying to enter again for 9 months in a country. That's trying to live somewhere and considered abuse of tourist entries.

You could be stopped trying to do 2, but very surely will be stopped trying it 3 times in a row. All depends on your travel history and the IO you meet on arrival.
