What are the challenges faced when applying for a DTV visa in Thailand after previous visas?

Jan 17, 2025
a month ago
I just wanted to go ahead and share my experience. I have been living in Thailand for two years now initially just doing boarder runs and then on a 1 year student visa. My student visa ended in September 2024. I did a boarder run to Malaysia and came back on on a 60 day exempt and extended another 30 days. I left Thailand December 20th. I applied for my DTV visa in Vietnam was approved under the workcation category. I entered Thailand and was denied entry initially. I had an interview/interegation my Thai language was tested. I do know quite of bit of Thai but didn't understand some of the questions asked and ultimately failed my interview. They asked for my outgoing ticket I didn't have one I bought a ticket on "OnwardTicket" that I have used in the past with no issues. This time didn't work and was denied entry all together. After my case being transferred to another officer and almost deported. I paid an additional 20k baht and was finally let in the country. Don't know if there was really an issue or just wanted bribe money. But Just thought I'd give a warning to those in similar situations.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shares a detailed experience of re-entering Thailand on a DTV visa after previously being on a student visa. They encountered challenges during the immigration process, including a denied entry, language proficiency testing, and a demand for an additional fee, which raised suspicions of corruption. Other users commented on the increasing scrutiny faced by individuals traveling on educational or border-run histories, and the implications of applying from neighboring countries instead of one's home country. There were also discussions about the reliability of the DTV visa and warnings against expecting guaranteed entry even with visa approval.

Anonymous participant I take it you're not Vietnamese? Another red flag seems to be people applying in neighbouring countries and not their home country. And they spent a lot of time in Thailand previously and then applied for the DTV. They seem to think you have been working illegally in Thailand.
Paul *******
@Sean ******
I see. I don't see why anyone would need to apply in their home country. That's not a requirement to get this visa or any other.
Sean *******
@Paul ******
I agree. This is the last post I remember where they got asked.

Yeah I know. I've just seen a few posts on here where people have been asked why didn't you apply in your home country? And are you working in Thailand? They never got denied though just questioned.

Not really. That's not a red flag. Having had previous volunteer or education visas and/or a history of back to back visa exempt stays is.

I think flying into phuket is the best option?
AllSabai ******
@Gael *****
totally the opposite even taking care of your Entry there is costing more than Bkk
Phil ********
Do not cross land to bounce at Poi Pet
Paul *******
Also, IF this VIP option actually exists, then pay up. It will cost you a lot more if you're refused entry, because of your "principles" than just paying what is a relatively small amount of money.

Again, I cannot verify the existence of this VIP option on the Thai side. I'm going by the reviews I've read.

I don't think it will ever apply to me, because I will always be driving through that border. I'll never use public transportation, thus I won't ever need to go upstairs to the hall there.
Paul *******
@Phil *******
There are some caveats to using that border. Leaving Thailand that way is always fine. No issue.

Coming back in, if you're the driver of a vehicle (car or motorcycle), it's generally alright, as you'll get stamped in outside. Immigration outside (for drivers of vehicles) and the hall upstairs are two different things.

Apparently, according to some Google reviews, there is a 1000 Baht VIP option. I'm not sure whether paying this means guaranteed entry or not. All I can say is, do NOT enter through Aranyaprathet (Poipet is the name of the city on the Cambodian side and they don't have nearly the same reputation for refusal of entry, though it depends on your nationality, as the Thai side does) IF you do not have a visa.

Ideally, if you have a choice, choose a different border to re-enter Thailand at.

However, in my experience, Aranyaprathet has worked for me BUT that's because I ALWAYS drive my own vehicle into the country (I don't do buses or other forms of public transportation) and due to this, I can avoid the tough upstairs immigration queue with the strict immigration officials.

I also have my own policy, where I don't take foreigners with me through that border, due to how strict it is and the high chance of refusal of entry. Either I go alone or with Thai nationals (family members or friends).

@Gael *****
You heard wrong. Phuket is one of the worst entry points. Most of the land borders are OK but don't do same day in/outs (except with the help of an agency at specific borders such as Ban Laem).
Leopold ********
@Paul ******
I just did in/out same day at Nongkhai. No agent, no questions asked. Actually, I asked the question if it would be possible to the officers no the thai side, to make sure I wouldn't get stuck on the Laos side. They said sure, no problem; and such it was 🙏
Paul *******
@Leopold *******
With a DTV, a same day in/out is OK but NOT recommended for doing the "switch" from visa exempt to DTV. Fine for doing a 180 day bounce.

Do NOT do a same day bounce at Aranyaprathet/Poipet, as you may be denied re-entry (even on a DTV) although staying out one or two nights and returning that way should be OK on a DTV.

I kept my student book with me when i entered with dtv after ed visa, just in case they test my language skill. I planned to ask them to ask anything from the book since they cannot expect more. But anyway they dont need a reason for deny entry, but that was my plan 😅 i was 2 years with tr+exempts before my 9months with ED too, so i was expecting something. The IO indeed looked my passport and said "oh you went school" and i said yea my gf insisted me to, but when he saw dtv visa he didnt ask more

Yes, he didn't do anything wrong as most people will consider but he got a student visa and wasn't able to to proof he was a student; that's what he did wrong and that's why he got denied. I don't know the circumstances, but I have seen several farang escorted away from entry area to "office". So was guessing there was some kind of stamp or visa problem. Most were younger and I've seen a few females as well. No words exchange, no fights, no challenges...just kind of the "you need to come with me" type of escort away from the normal entry booth. I'm just standing in line. Also saw several people who I think were Chinese show a QR code on the phone while handing over PP, but none of the immigration officers seemed to care about those. Certainly didn't scan them. I have a friend who is retired immigration officer and asked him about the QR codes and he thought that was some kind of visa, but wasn't sure. Said maybe the visa is also in the passport and also in immigration system.

They got a lot harder on people staying on endless visa exemptions/tourist visas etc years ago, that is, a couple of years before Covid (around 2017 or 2018).

Things have continued to tighten up further in more recent times. However, we've been hearing of the occasional denied entry since at least 2015 and this has only intensified over the past few years except during Covid when almost no one could come in of course, and immigration was more flexible towards those stuck here.
James ********
@Paul ******
agreed 👍. As both Tod Daniels and I have stated numerous times, the Thai Immigration Officers upon your arrival appear to be more strict now than before with those who have been staying in Thailand using Visa Exempt Entry, extensions, Ed Visa and Volunteer Visas.
Paul *******
@James *******
Indeed, they are getting stricter and I do agree that things have become a lot more stringent since July 2024. Just that this process started almost a decade ago; in that people living in Thailand on visa exempt stamps started to be scrutinized, especially at some of the airports and Aranyaprathet / Ranong / some of the southern borders beginning maybe around 2013-15 and this intensified in the post-Covid period.

Likewise those who have the Ed Visa or Volunteer Visas in their passport or Thai immigration history, are more subject to be questioned by Thai Immigration Officers. They're cracking down on the fraud obtained Ed and Volunteer Visas.

This problem is common with student visas, my boyfriend had this problem but luckily he left the country with me, we came back to Thailand together and they wouldn't let my boyfriend enter the country but I talked to them and begged them, after that he was allowed to enter the country without paying any money. After that I asked the school why they did this and the school said that they often do this to student visa holders and then say that it is illegal so that they can demand money if they want to enter Thailand.

Thank you for sharing your experience. 🙏

Everyone should be aware that a visa approval is not the same as a guaranteed entry to Thailand.

You are not the first one being tested after having an ED visa to study thai language and you won't be the last... Failing the test - making the immigration officer question if you had the previous visa for the right reason - could of course make them question if the new visa is for a legit reason as well. No matter what I think about bribes, I guess for you, it meant being allowed to enter...

I have just come off a chat with Thai agent about 2 mins ago. Talked to them and another yesterday. Each of them reporting more checks like this with their clients. i will note after my ED muay thai, i left for over 6 months, got a visa they no longer have (STV or something, some 90d one) - they made a big deal about me coming in that time. they couldn't quiz me on thai but asked for muay thai proof at one point so i teeped the female officer across the desk. actually i showed some videos i had then they said they didn't want to fight me so all was good. still took forever though, i had to eventually sign something about leaving in 90d. although i switched visa types and stayed at that point. i do think ED language is likely to result in them being the most skeptical and testing people.

it’s not a scam, it’s the simple reality. He played with fire. And got burned. It happens

Should have got a new passport before applying for the DTV.

A new passport does not help.

Thailand records biometrics, which would match to the same person regardless of passport. That's why they scan your fingerprints at the IO counter at the airport.

Well getting a new passport worked for me. That's all the knowledge I have about it. I don't claim to know everything they have in the "SYSTEM".

i would have never thought it would be an issue since I had proper studen visa and dtv approval. They only seemed to question my ED visa never mentioned the tourists stamps.

Anonymous participant if you have an edu visa you can’t even apply for an elite visa which costs 500,000thb, so they definitely have some issue with Edu.

On that note I did have an edu visa during initially covid but I got the dtv on soft power easily and just recently re entered Thailand 10 days ago, no questions but I was traveling with my Thai gf.

Anonymous participant The visa exemption stamps wouldn't have helped either. They're clamping down on that now too.

‘clamping down’…. On what exactly. They have been ‘clamping down’ since the internet started and people with no clue could offer opinions to the masses

They have your details from old passport too. It is all in the chip these days. Might have worked 25 years ago. EDIT. What about your pic and fingerprints taken upon entry too?
Incognia **********
@Greg *******
Totally different.Visas being in old passport not same visas being on system.

Worked for me with my dodgy volunteer visa. I would have got denied entry or pay tea money like the OP.
Greg ********
@Sean ******
They would still have your volunteer visa details. Entry IO just not bothered about it.

normal immigration officer in counter cant see more than 6 entries.They should send you to other officers.
Greg ********
@Incognia *********
And that is what they do. They pull you out and send you to more senior officer in an office. Exactly the same as everywhere else in the world.

They would have been if they saw it in my passport. My agent said it gave lots of her customers problems. Get a new passport.
