I'm in  taipei right now. What is my best  option for a visa? Is the two month visa available if I apply online, or do I need to find the embassy here? I want to rent a place in bangkok so the  six month visa is what I really want but I'm American so I'm not sure if it makes sense for me to go all the way back home to get it just in order to come back, when I'm already in Asia? Would  appreciate your feedback and suggestions

Why not not use USA evisa? If you have the required documentation should be relatively easy. Might want to use a vpn... Main thing will be showing your flight itennary... The may question your not coming/returning USA.

that is what I originally wanted to do. Then I leaned about the home country restriction.

You mention using a VPN. Could of course do that but my understanding is part of the visa requirement is you need to show them a round-trip ticket for a flight originating in your home county and going to Thailand.

I need to fly out of taipei, so I don't see how I can meet the home country flight ticket requirement.

How would it be possible?

Chris Alexander might just show then whatever you're doing flight wise and add to that document your explanation. Worst case you're out $40 and may have to wait a week to find out. Might be worth a shot. Honesty might be best policy. I'm not a visa expert!

Am I noy inderstanding something here? As I understand it US ,Canadian Citizens and a lot more are supposed to be using the Evisa system in the Country that issued their passports? Been no problem for me so why couldn't the guy apply on line from Taiwan?

you have to apply using the evisa system for the country you are physically in, assuming they use it. Otherwise you go to the embassy in that country

Because you have to state where you are applying from and if you are truthful it will say that the eVisa is not available to you

The Thai embassy in Taiwan has not adopted evisa yet, so you would have to apply in person. But the requirements for the tourist visa shows a requirement to be a citizen of Taiwan. This is a very common requirement of Thai embassies in that region of the world (same in Korea and in Japan) so I don't think you can apply for any Thai visa in Taiwan. You can double check with the Thai embassy though, but the website shows you have to be a resident.

Requirement number 3: Original Taiwan identification card OR Taiwan resident certificate with ONE photocopy

that's too bad! So basically my best option would be to fly in on the 30 day visa waiver and extend once, then go to a nearby country to apply for the two month visa after that? What's the nearest place to go for two month visa if you're living in bangkok? I got a two month thai visa in Vientiane a decade ago, but at that time I eat living in Vientiane

In stead of trying to milk the tourist visa system, get a correct visa for your activities in Thailand.

Most people go to Laos, as you said. Vientiene requires an appointment, but Savannakhet does not.

Other options include Singapore, Penang Malaysia, and I've heard people recommend flying into Yangon and say the Thai embassy there is very accommodating, but no direct reports about that last one.
