Sorry if this is too long but I entered a few years ago on a METV and then switched to a 3 month ED Visa and then to COVID extensions after that. I haven't left the country since. I haven't ever cancelled the ED Visa before switching to COVID extensions.
My question is if my ED Visa is still active? I got the school to send me a letter saying my studies ended, if I cancel it now, does that mean I have to leave right away or my COVID permission to stay date would still be valid? I
I'm trying to switch to an elite visa but they say you must cancel it the same day you have an appointment to have the Elite Visa affixed but they can only affix it in Bangkok and I'd have to cancel my ED in another city. I have a feeling this advice is for people with a current permission to stay from an ED visa though which I no longer have. Any advice or help with this would be appreciated. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the status of their ED Visa, which they believe to be still active due to not officially canceling it before transitioning to COVID extensions. They seek clarification on whether canceling the ED Visa would affect their current COVID permission to stay and the process for switching to an Elite Visa, which requires the ED Visa to be canceled on the same day as their appointment in Bangkok.
you will have to get documentation from the school you attended for the ED visa stating you STOPPED studying on xxx date. Then you go to your immigration office and cancel that extension (even though you're on covid extension now
Just letting an ED visa extension run out does NOT cancel it and you aren't gonna get an elite visa until you do cancel it.
SO contact the school you got the ED visa/extension from get the termination of study papers from them GO to the immigration ofice that issued the last ED extension and cancel it. Be prepared to pay a fine for failing to cancel an extension officially before switching to another type.
(y) In Bangkok you do BOTH the cancellation of extension AND getting the elite visa sticker stuck on and getting hyour new year stamp at the Counter N ๐
You shouldn't have any issues getting it done, you're far from the first foreigner who didn't cancel their extension correctly
Thanks Todd but they specifically told me I have to cancel the non-ed where I received it which is Chonburi and that Chaeng Wattana wouldn't cancel it or could refuse if it isn't. So still possible, just a hassle.
Yeah I have letter from the school and live in Chonburi so I was mainly wondering if I needed to cancel it which you answered and if I have to do it the same day or I can do it at anytime and still remain in the country until my Elite Visa is affixed.
you're not on an ED extension any more you're on a covid one from what you say
AND
as far as if you cancel your old ED extension will it also cancel your current covid extension <- meaning you need to get to bangkok THAT day to switch over to the Elite, I dunno (you need to be talking to your immigration office)
AND you need to be coordinating this WITH elite so when you do get it cancelled you can get up to bangkok and get the elite sticker stuck in.
They haven't been that helpful so far and have given me some conflicting information at times which is why I thought I would ask the experts here. No, they won't do it Chonburi.
guess you'll find out what happens when you show up at Jomtien to get that extension cancelled ๐ No telling how it will work, BUT get in touch with Elite because IF cancelling that ED extension cancels your current covid extension too, you would have to get the elite sticker stuck in the same day (you can't get an elite on overstay)

You do have a possible problem.
Did you obtain any extension of stay of your Ed Visa? Meaning beyond the initial 90 days of the Ed Visa?
Did you not get an Ed Visa extension of 90 days? And obtained a COVID ectension after the first 90 days of the Ed Visa ?
