I am here in Thailand on Visa exempt. I cannot get a bank account as tourist, but I cannot get Non-O Immigrant Visa without a bank account! I meet qualifications for Retirement Visa. I have a lease through early July In Karon Beach Phuket.

Is there any way I can get the Non-O without returning to USA?

I hit 62 this month snd am exploring options of where to go, Thailand was high on my list of options but it seems like it would be a constant hassle with bank accounts, visa etc. I meet monthly income requirements but still seems very inconsistent with how stuff works and is enforced

I opened my bank account 3 months ago on a visa exempt stamp and paid the extra money to the legal company who were progressing my retirement visa through the non O route. I tried myself with a native Thai speakers help and all the correct documents ( same used in both applications) and was rejected went back with the legal team and magically came away with the bank account in Bangkok

But rules changed last week.

@Henrik ****
not wishing to get into a long winded he said you said; I agree the laws changed, agents are saying different things but my advice would be to go to somewhere like Siam Legal pay a little more and get a better outcome.
Henrik *****
Siam Legal is the worst scammers to interact with, they can’t even see the differens between their compagny and a Thai Embassy.

There is absolutely no reason to support corruption in any form, and most agents are mainly corrupting things, that are straight forward for people to do themselves, with a little interest in controling their own life situation.
Alistair ********
@Henrik ****
rules continue to change, my point was the fact a good agent can open closed doors. Reading enough posts on here teaches us that exceptions seem to be as frequent as what was expected. I felt it was worth speaking to someone like Siam legal before living in Cambodia et al trying to get a visa that way. If I knew the correct answer I would not be reading the posts
Henrik *****
Several agents has published, that they no longer can open bankaccounts for tourists.
Philip *******
John Pollins you could visit Vientiane and apply for the non o there or Kuala Lumpur apply outside for 90 days get bank account once that's granted then you can do the extension

@Philip ******
that seems like the way to go

I understand that someone on a tourist visa can open a Thai savings account which is acceptable for the visa you require.
Henrik *****
That was the reality until last week, but it is changed now.
James *********
@Jim *********
I don't think so now. I've read multiple reports of folks being unsuccessful.
Jim **********
@James ********
unless it's a new thing it is mentioned on the Siam Legal website and another visa agency has suggested this to me. So let's wait and see.

Oh nice! Please let us know on this, or a new post if you are successful!👍🙏

The new rules start yesterday on 17 feb
Henrik *****
But that was before rules changed.

Do people not staying longterm ever sell their bank accounts if they dont use them anymore. 🤔 😒 🤔

@Tez *****
what you mean "sell their bank account"

You have to wait for 3 weeks till its sorted out, I go with KEY VISA,

Originally went to Kasikorn in Pattaya and had no problems. I do believe though there's been a tightening up of bank accounts because of criminals.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

I went to get my Thailand motorcycle certificate at Honda Bigwing in Phuket. Once I received the certificate, I learned about the resident certificate. Apparently I need a resident certificate before the land office gives me the Thailand motorcycle driving license. Is the immigration office the only place to get the resident certificate? I've never heard of a resident certificate until now. And, I'm married to a thai national with a thai bank account already. Not once have ove been asked for a resident certificate. Only now that I'm going to obtain my thai motorcycle driving license.
Brandon ************
@Ernesto ******
Yes, the immigration office is the only place you get a residence certificate. They are fairly simple to get as long as you have a TM30.
Henrik *****
The resindence certificat was supposed to be proof on you have been staying at a permanent adress in Thailand for at least 3 month, but some immigration offices have startet to give them away earlier, which means, that it has lost it’s value in the context of opening a bankaccount.

Perhaps less issues regarding vehicle buy and driving licenses.

Read the local Immigration office website for more information.
Michael *******
Not really some neighboring countries may allow you to obtain an O Visa there, but many require you to be a national , a resident, or have a work permit for that country. Things have gotten more tricky now banks have decided to stop agents paying backhanders, May not last long……..
Pat *****
Maybe not possible anymore, but i did following: went to immi after i had my non imm O and they made a letter for BKK bank to open an account.( Hua Hin, small office at first floor, 500 baht)
Graham ******
@Pat ****
you mean a residence certificate
Pat *****
@Graham *****
no, a letter to open bank account at BKK bank
Nongnuch ********
@Pat ****
that's called "certificate of residence" from Immigration which contains a pledge to let you open a bank account. . . This COR can be had for different purposes: buying and registering a car, renewing ther driver's license, or in your case, for opening a bank account. It has a limited validity, mostly in the range of 4 weeks
David *******
At the moment it looks impossible. very recent crackdown has meant agents can’t do it at the moment either. Even if you get a Non O else there’s no guarantee you’ll get an account as it’s not classe as a long term visa.
Brandon ************
@David ******
only for a few agents in Pattaya.
Jeff ********
There is currently a disconnect between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Immigration

You are going to have to wait on your Non O visa until they figure it out
Brandon ************
@Jeff *******
there isn't any disconnect. You're supposed to apply for a visa at an embassy. That's how it works in every other country in the world.
Jeff ********
@Brandon ***********
you're an idiot
Stuart *********
@Jeff *******
You’re the idiot for thinking there is a ministry of immigration. If you knew anything about Thailand and immigration like Brandon does then you’d know the Immigration Bureau is a division of the Royal Thai Police that is overseen by the Office of the Commissioner General.

What’s happening at the moment is not a disconnect between government departments that probably never speak to each other anyway but the Ministry of Finance is cracking down on spurious accounts and trying to solve money laundering schemes. The fact that this may disrupt immigration or other government departments probably is of no concern to them at this stage.

You’re gonna survive a long time in this group. Telling one moderator that he’s an idiot and another to FO. It’s a forum for immigration questions about Thailand and visas etc. Not for nancy keyboard warriors that have no clue what they’re talking about.
Ian *********
get an agent open one for u .or try the yellow bank .ive heard many say its easier open one there
Pat ********
@Ian ********
all agents have been blocked from opening bank accounts , not sure for how long.
Brandon ************
@Pat *******
that's not true at all. It's only a few agents in Pattaya that are blocked. Everything else is business as normal
Dave **********
@Brandon ***********
must be because of a certain country's citizens are money laundering...wonder who that could be!!!
Brandon ************
@Dave *********
Scamming certainly isn't limited to citizens of a single country. But when the government starts looking for patterns and sees a few banks in Pattaya opening hundreds of accounts for foreigners and then having 800,000 baht deposited and removed within minutes, over and over again, it's going to raise red flags.
Dave **********
@Brandon ***********
I've witnessed citizens of certain country doing it in Pattaya. I'm glad the government are cracking down on it
Christopher ***********
As already advised, normally an agent would be the easiest way to go. Unfortunately, we are in difficult times at the moment. Hopefully, it won’t be for long.
Brandon ************
@Christopher **********
only a few agents who open dozens of accounts per week are blocked. Every other agent is business as usual.

Try a different province

Go to a neighbouring country and get the non-O there

probably the best plan. Any idea where would be the place to get one the fastest?

@John ********
i heard Malaysia was the fastest and more standardized. you may try contact the Thai embassy from there.
Andy ************
@John ********
I don't know since the eVisa system went worldwide. Probably best to check the embassy websites around the area

@Andy ***********
you might not know the answer to this, but do I need to be in Cambodia to apply for the visa from the Thai embassy in Cambodia? Or could I be in Thailand and apply online and then go pick it up? But I guess I would need to be there to give them the documents, right
Philip *******
@John ********
yes you need to be out of Thailand to apply ask around Vientiane had a 4 day turn around for 90 day non o before Christmas
Stuart *********
It’s incredibly difficult these days to open a bank account on a tourist/exempt entry. Even agents struggle.

You don’t have to return to the US. You can visit a nearby country and apply there.
Hillz ********
@Stuart ********
so if the individual applied for Non O in another country than Thailand then the proof of funds can be in a bank account from any other country? Sorry to hijack the post.
Dirk **************
@Hillz *******
yes, I originally applied for a Non-O visa based on marriage online in the U.S. and all I needed to send was a pdf file of my investment statements. So yes, the money can be in an account abroad.
Stuart *********
@Hillz *******
Yes the initial visa obtain from abroad can be any bank funds from anywhere. Only the initial non O in country and extensions need money in Thai bank.
Jason ******
@Stuart ********
do you need to get the criminal record check still ?
Stuart *********
@Jason *****
No that’s for a Non OA visa which you can only apply for in your home country or country of legal residence.
Jason ******
@Stuart ********
ok,I'm returning to Thailand to stay in October ,I will get the retirement visa and stick the 800k in a bank ,is the best way to get the Non OA visa first to enable opening a bank account in Thailand for the deposit and progression to retirement visa ?
Nongnuch ********
@Jason *****
you can open a thai bank account on a 90-days Non-Imm-O retirement visa (no Non-Imm-O/A needed!) and go to the 1-year Extension of Stay based on Retirement from there. The Non-O ( no "A") is a much easier to obtain visa
Jason ******
@Nongnuch *******
I'm leaving Thailand in June to India,Egypt and Turkey ,I'm a Irish passport holder,can I apply in Istanbul at the Thai embassy for which visa ,so I can enter Thailand in October and open a bank account to transfer funds ?
Nongnuch ********
@Jason *****
complete chaos on the Ankara website. I suggest you apply in Ireland, would be the easiest
Jason ******
@Nongnuch *******
ok I need to think as I didn't want to go to Ireland ,I just need to find the easiest way to open a bank account here to put the 800k to get the retirement visa 🙏🏽thank you for your advice 🙏🏽
Nongnuch ********
@Jason *****
try an agent in another province, not in Pattaya. It seems to afflict Pattaya only. You could call up a few in Chiang Mai or Bangkok and ask
Jason ******
@Nongnuch *******
I want to have my own bank account and not be tied into an agent ,at some point laws around agents could change and I want to do it all properly ,but much appreciated 🙏🏽
Nongnuch ********
@Jason *****
nothing speaks against an agent assisting you in opening a Thai bank account only. You are then free to apply for the "change of visa type" from a tourist visa or visa-exempt entry to the in-country initial 90-Days Non-Imm-O Retirement visa fully legally on your own, using your own + 800,000 THB funds in your bank account. No agent needed for that if you have this kind of money.
Nongnuch ********
oh shit, just found out if you choose "visa categories", a "PAGE NOT FOUND" will open . .
Nongnuch ********
@Jason *****
all these Thai embassies have gone online, applications can only be made through the E-visa system. And you have to be in that country physically, you need to prove your current location in during the application. You will find the requirements for a 90-days Non-Imm-O retirement visa on the website of the Royal Thai Embassy Ankara (Instanbul is not the capital of Turkey)
