You've just invented all of that....look at the Government Website its all very clear. You never did say where you could get an IDP on line in the UK....

Legally you need an IDP AND license for both a car or motorbike. The IDP is only an internationally accepted translation of a driving license.

Whete can you get an IDP online in the UK?? You have to take your driving license and passport to get one.

It's easy to get a Thai driving license if your local land Transport office issues them on a tourist visa. I got mine in Chiang Mai no problems.
