Morning,

a friend just arrived with a 30 day exemption. At home in Canada she applied for a longer tourist visa, a process that took so long she had to take her flight without a visa. 

Now she asks what are the possibilities for her to get extensions or a proper visa. Within Thailand or a visit to a neighbouring country.

For the current entry stamp, she can apply for 30 days tourism extension once at the local immigration office. She can stay for 60 days in total now. No further option inside Thailand for tourism purpose.

If her application was approved later, she can leave Thailand, come back, and enter on that tourist visa to be stamped for 60 days upon entry (This is called a "border-run"). That new stamp is also eligible for 30 days tourism extension again.

, She can also apply for a new Single Entry Tourist Visa at the consulate/embassy in the country she is staying outside Canada, but not in Thailand.

, She already applied when she was in Canada, right? So if that application was approved after she left Canada, she can use that for the next entry.

yes. The one she applied for in Canada. She beware of the expiration of the visa. I think it’s only good for like 90 days and has to be used or its useless.
