Travel a bit first to places you like the look of. I wouldn't wanna live in bkk if not working. Pattaya is good for other expats and stuff to do but too much temptation so gotta be careful....

Can get retirement visa in Thailand or start process in uk first pros and cons.

Get some hobbies which will involve meeting people - golf even pool as lots of societies / leagues in pattaya anyhow....

Don't be attracted by the wonderful beach resorts.I looked around many places and opted for the area where originally it was the last place I wanted to go. But I spent a while in Udan Thani and now live there. It is cheaper all round as well than the beach resorts.

 when I first arrived here I live in Bang Na about one hour away from Bangkok, then I moved to khon kaen, then Korat, then Udon thani which I like very much before I met my wife, now the last 5 years living in Kantharalak, made lots of friends here and a good social life

 excellent David well done. I have been Udan for 18 months. Do like the place apart of course the odd idiot expat and the motorcycles!. I hope to be married to my Thai girlfriend in about one month. Best wishes.

Travel see where suits you. Certain places OK for holidays not to live. Some places suit some but not others

The question is a bit vague. Come here on 60 day tv and extend for 30 days. Travel around. Find somewhere you like and rent a place. Next step long term visa which has many possibilities according to your situation. Best thing to do though is to get out of the UK before it's too late. Go anywhere.

If you are a single guy there are plenty of things to do, first you need to decide where you want to live, Pattaya isn't a good place to live but good for a short break, I live in the Northeast of Thailand, Kantharalak Sisaket, lots of British people live here,
