TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the challenges of opening a bank account in Bangkok with a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV). Several commenters share their experiences, indicating that new regulations have made it difficult, if not impossible, for DTV holders to establish a bank account. One user successfully opened an account with Bangkok Bank, while another warns that DTV holders are not eligible for bank accounts due to recent crackdowns and regulations. There are mentions of agents who might assist, but they might come at a high cost. Overall, there seems to be confusion and differing experiences regarding the eligibility of DTV holders for bank accounts in Thailand.

So if a bank account isn’t the route to go then can someone advise what is the best strategy to access funds in that country?

You can western union money to yourself. Just download the app and add yourself as sender and receiver.

A tourist is most likely not able to open a account in your country too, so nothing specifik to Thailand.

Just use card in ATM, as other tourists in Thailand.

Try opening one as a citizen in the UK. I had to jump through hoops to open HSBC in UK and I had an account with them in Singapore. I paid for some expedited process in the end.

Wise is very good. I use that. It is a multicurrency online account you transfer funds to and it will exchange money into the currency of your choice. You then use the card in the currency eg THB. Despite the recent clampdown, you can still open a bank account via an agent as Greg mentioned. The cost to do so has increased though.

It’s like any other debitcard and a exchenge booth in one, you put money into the account in any currency, and go to ATM and withdraw the money in Baht.

There is an agent in this group can help you in Bangkok. Cost depends on passport you hold but it is not cheap compared to other locations
