Can I leave Thailand on the same day my non-immigrant ED visa expires?

Yes you can get readmitted .. make sure you have an onward flight and be prepared to get asked for travel purpose

As long as you stamp out before 11:59 on the 18th of January you're good.

IF you are on the original 90 day entry from the ED visa you just leave and it's fine..

And as an Italian citizen you can get 30 days exempt visa on arrival upon entry. No tourist visa is needed... You stated you would get a tourist visa.

Be careful as there is no guaranteed reentry upon your arrival from Myanamar

Just how many months were you in Thailand in 2019?

In 2018?

If you have a history of many entries over a year or more, I recommend that you NOT FLY back into Thailand.

In fact cross by land border from Myanamar..or Laos/Nong Khai probably best.

Be sure to have 20,000 Thai baht or its equal in cash, your address of stay and your confirmed ticket out of Thailand.

if you're on the initial 90 days which you got on entry in the rectangle stamp Admitted until, you can leave that day until midnight 23:59.

If you come back into Thailand and you did not buy a Visa at the Thai Consulate you get 30 days Visa Exempt Entry.
