Tomorrow I am going to the immigration office to cancel my extension of stay and then do a visa run that evening. Do I need any extra paperwork other than the letter provided by my school? Are there any fees and I assume it won't take very long?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to cancel their extension of stay at the immigration office before doing a visa run. They inquire about additional paperwork beyond the letter from their school, potential fees, and the duration of the process. Responses suggest that it's necessary to cancel the extension at the local immigration office to avoid complications, and it's advised to confirm any specific requirements with the office directly. Some discussions highlight that obtaining a non-immigrant visa can be done within Thailand, but standard procedures must be followed.

, you can cancel your ED extension, leave the country, come back in on either a 30 day visa exempt or a 60 day tourist visa and apply for a 90 day Non-O visa at the immigration office then once you get that you can apply for a year long extension of stay based on being over 50 retirement. In Bangkok it takes three visits, one to apply for the 90 day Non-O, one to go back two weeks later and get it stamped into your passport (because it goes under consideration for 14 days) and one more trip to get the yearly extension of stay after you have 45 days or less left on the Non-O stamp
Yes... I want to switch from an ED to retirement... so, cancel ED... leave country... come back non-O... then apply for retirement at Immigration, correct?

Tim. If you are on an extension of stay for education and decide to stop going to school or change the type of entry you are on, you need to first cancel the current extension. Not doing so would cause you problems with your new application for an extension or even problems at the airport upon entering.

Andrew, you are correct in canceling the extension of stay (which is not a visa) before leaving. If is was simply a visa then the airport would probably be fine. You cancel at the same desk (thus same cue) for getting an extension so the line may still be long. However, once you are called, you be out really quick. You will have to leave that day by midnight or buy a 7 day "extension denied" stamp. Safe travels.
, you can indeed get a non-immigrant visa inside of thailand :/ Anyone can and you don't need an agency to push paper for you.

There is no Thai consulate or embassy within Thailand. And technically you can not buy a visa at immigration. Yes, some people use agencies and pay tons of cash and get it done. But is is not cheap.
I think you need to go through the normal steps of cancellation of your extension, leave Thailand, get a new SETV, return to Thailand, apply for the Non-O extension.
is the guy to answer this for sure, but give him some time to reply as he is on vacation overseas.

Any other paperwork needed at all other than the letter?

I would do it that way. I am glad the consulate didn't require it when I did it backwards. Do it your way.

Am gonna go with the advice I got about going to my local immigration office. If it's wrong it'll just mean going to the border. As stupid as it sounds, it's sounds correct.

I didn't know about the cancel the ED visa letter from the school, and just left, got another visa type just fine at the consulate. Then when I went to EXTEND that new different visa, they had me run to the school to get the letter before she would give me the extension.

I have been advised I need to cancel in the immigration office that first issued it. If I don't the danger of applying for another means it may be rejected. Best to do it properly. Apparently when you cross a border without canceling beforehand, it's not completely canceled apparently. It's such a headache
