What is the easiest type of visa to obtain for long-term stays in Thailand without frequent renewals or trips out of the country?

Hello All, I’ve been lazily following the group, but with the US essentially being burned down, time to take a serious look. Just need the group to point me in a direction. Looking for the path to the most-hassle free type of Visa. You guessed it, I want the minimal amount of renewals, one day out of the county trips. I have read about the 5 and 10 year visas, but any advice would be appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation centers around finding the most hassle-free visa options for expats looking to move to Thailand. Notably, the 10-year LTR (Long-Term Resident) visa is highly recommended for its minimal renewal requirements and additional benefits, though it has high income criteria. The 5-year DTV (Digital Nomad Tourist Visa) offers easier maintenance for those traveling frequently, requiring fewer bureaucratic trips. Alternative options such as the Elite visa and considerations for personal circumstances regarding work and income are also discussed.

Visa exempt using passport but once you are there get a Non-o visa if you are looking from longer time avaible DTV but you have to have around 14k USD in bank or assets to qualify.

But if your reason for going is cause you feel the US is in fire then your a fool but enjoy anyway 😉

The US is gone, it is obliterated, it is a pale shadow of its former self, and anyone who has the potential to leave that broken down nation should do so without hesitation.

I get it, everyone’s living their own version of reality. But the whole country burning down? A quite unqualified statement. Meanwhile, the sun is shining and the birds are chirping out here in West Texas. You do you, brother.

Speaking of perspective though, are you planning on working, or do you have substantial savings or remote income? Are you old enough to qualify for the special retirement visa? These are all things to think about and consider for your situation. To answer your question straightforwardly it’s “easy” and “hassle-free” enough to just show up as a tourist with one of the visa exempt countries and get your quick stamp and just leave and come back a day before it expires. But it is something to think about to fine tune your request to adapt to your personal circumstances.

If you intend to travel overseas regularly (2-3 times a year) the DTV is the best visa by a country mile. The new "Super Visa" which has seen thousands of applications and people switching from ED, non-O retirement and non-O marriage visas in their hundreds. A very easy to use visa which requires zero money to be put into a Thai bank account thereby circumnavigating any taxation issues. It's the Thailand Visa Of The Century

I retired to the region in March of 23 from NYC planning on doing a retirement visa. But then I visited the neighboring countries and prefer what I’m doing. I travel every 90 days splitting my time between Thailand Vietnam Malaysia and Cambodia. I actually prefer the variety and this way I can avoid the most extreme weather. I’m in Dana g Vietnam these three months. (Perfect weather) Kuala Lumpur the next three months. Thailand 2 months then I might spend 4 months or longer in Cambodia.
Edward ******
It’s not a perfect system but what works for me. Certainly should be adapted. Honestly my favorite stop of the year is now. From February onward for about 4 months Central Vietnam is ideal. Mildest weather of the year only occasionally above 90. This year I’ll follow it up with Kuala Lumpur. I’ve been told the weather is mostly consistent there and it has been for my visits in addition even though it’s warm and there can be rains there is a tremendous amount you can do indoors there. There is also very advanced infrastructure that eliminates any concerns about flooding. Rains tend to be intense but relatively short in duration. I think you can visit there most any time. Then I’m actually going to dip back into central Vietnam it will be hot but dry right up until the start of October. By then Cambodia is getting ok but there and Thailand are mostly best by November. I aim primarily to avoid the highest heat first then rains. While I like central Vietnam a great deal I wouldn’t go there October to January. Unfortunately air pollution is also factoring into my travel as well. I would avoid burning season February onward in places like Chiangmai and I’d monitor it in Hanoi and Bangkok in my travels as well.

If you have the means, the LTR wealthy pensioner visa is definitely the way to go. Yearly address reporting (versus quarterly for everyone else), multiple entry, no income taxes on money transferred in, & assistance at the airport & also with opening a bank account, are just some of the benefits. All you need is to prove $80k annual passive income to the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI).
Tony *********
@Joseph ******
what is $80k in baht
Todd *********
@Tony ********
2.7M baht per year
Joseph *******
@Tony ********
Multiply by around 33 & you’ll know. But the fx rate is extremely volatile these days, with Trump & Elon taking turns at shocking the markets.
David *********
@Joseph ******
airport assistance? Do tell. I have LTR and travel frequently. Only perk at the airport is no immigration line at the LTR counter. Let me know if I’m missing something.
Joseph *******
@David ********
What else do you need? “No line” is a perk in my book.
Wayne ********
@Joseph ******
what do they mean by passive income?
Todd *********
@Wayne *******
passive, as in you don't need to work for it. Pensions, rental income, investment, annuity, dividends etc
Wayne ********
Todd *********
The 10 year LTR is the best visa the country has ever had. But fairly high income requirements. The DTV is a 5 year tourist visa but you have to report every 90 days and leave the country every 180 days
Lee ***********
@Todd ********
or extend in country once for another 180 days then have to leave and return, start again
Todd *********
@Lee **********
yes, it's possible. But now many reports of that being way too much hassle at immigration
Lee ***********
@Todd ********
agree read the same, alot to do with soft power options, my IO said no issue, I'm on a Freelancer status though.
