TLDR : Answer Summary
The cost of a Lao Visa on Arrival for UK passport holders appears to be around $40, with some reports indicating it could be $41 if a photograph is needed. There have also been mentions of different prices such as $35 at a land crossing. Therefore, travelers should be prepared with US dollars and may need to adjust the amount slightly based on the specific situation at the airport.
I’m not from the US don’t need them, never have in 57 years apart from visiting USA and Laos.

A side note, visa on arrival you lose a whole page of passport with a big visa sticker, e-visa you just receive a small stamp

it's USD $40.- for all nationalities for a Lao Visa on Arrival, except for China.... oftentimes, if you don't have a photo then add $1 to be USD $41.- make sure the bankrotes, are clean and crisp (new)....

A few moths ago I paid 40 US dollars + 1 US dollar = total of 41 Dollars, on arrival in Luang Prabang.
also , the VOA is a full page in your passport , e visa a small sticker I would highly recommend the e visa , as it saves heaps of time lining up when you arrive. Depending on the time of the day there can be 50 people lining up for visa on arrival. But e visa has 1 or 2 dedicated lines in Vientiane it’s pretty quick ( we’ll worth the 12$)
