On the Surat Thani immigration website they have a rogue's gallery -- pictures of happy IOs and the people they've arrested (faces covered). Many are for overstay. Google Translate helped me to find out that there are people overstaying by years and years.

A lot of people tend to be quite caviler about overstaying but in reality it is against the law and the way the overstay riles are written IF you're caught out on an overstay of 1 day to 1 year you can indeed be banned for 5 years.
Granted I don't know anyone who was caught on a short overstay (less than 90 days) who was banned BUT the law is written so that it is a possibility.
I would say DON'T overstay.

Seems like a good deal just 20,000 Baht, overstay for a few years until you want to move somewhere else and the ban won't mean anything if you don't get caught and ready to leave for good and don't plan on coming back!
not my problem , I know them I wouldn’t say they are friends 😉 , it’s just both ‘ I believe ‘ are living from hand to mouth , pouncing , ones working I think , not sure now . They don’t want a deportation stamp . And have nothing ( again I’m not 100% ) back in the uk .

Martin, They do not have to be scared. It is just a 20.000 Thb fine, a nice lecture of some officials and a ban to come back. Dress up nice be polite and have the money available. But by staying inside there is more to be scared of, if they run into a Police check.
