I just tried to renew my non imm AO retirement visa at Prachuapkhirikhan immigration Hua Hin and was informed that I need to have medical insurance cover, a new regulation since October last year apparently. 

Questions

1/ can anyone recommend an insurance company they have used to provide cover. I am 67 years old.

2/ immigration advised that instead I could allow my existing one year visa to expire on 27th June, leave Thailand before amnesty expires, and return on a 30 day tourist visa. Then apply for a 90 day extension and then apply for a non imm O  retirement one year visa which doesn’t require medical insurance. Is this something anyone has done and can recommend?

I think I overheard when I was at immigration last week there were 8 companies they have on their list. Could be totally wrong. I use Pacific Cross and I submitted it and the officer seemed happy enough but mine was for a Non O. Best to ask immigration their approved companies if in doubt.

Thai Immigration has given you good advice.

You will be on amnesty til July 31.

As soon as a border opens either do a border run to get 30 days visa exempt entry or get a tourist visa from a Thai Consulate nearby.

Then begin the process as Thai Immigration said to conversion to Non O and Extension of Stay for one year in Thailand.

You will need to have 800,000 Thai baht in a Thai bank account.

thanks James. I will only go somewhere I can get back here from. Reading about bilateral discussions on travel corridors between countries so I’ll wait and see what happens but will definitely go for the O visa. Best regards and thanks again.

thanks very much. I would intend to visit my son in Singapore if that’s possible then and just return here as a 30 day tourist first and apply for 90 day extension etc. The bank account is not a problem.
