Hi, I’ve just read a post on here that states that you need 400k in Thai bank “on the day of application”, for a marriage visa. 

I always thought it had to be in the bank for 2 months before you could apply? Or is this rule just for extensions?

Marriage Visa, short for Non Immigrant O visa based on being married with Thai National, gives you 90 days of stay.

Marriage Visa, short for 1 year Extension of Stay based on being a family member of a Thai National to extend the 90 day period.

Different things with different names changed in an easy name makes the confusion,

Yes, seasoning is for an extension.

When you want to stay longer with a visa/extension for being married to a Thai, and want to do inside Thailand, you will do:

1. Apply for an initial in-country visa that gives you 90 days stay

2. Apply for a 1-year extension that gives you up to one year

(then repeat 2 after year passes)

Then, about the banked money method,

For 1, you have to have funds of 400K baht in your Thai bank account

on the day of application. No seasoning is required.

For 2, you must have funds of 400K baht in your Thai bank account at least for 2 calendar months as of application day.

, no, there are different extensions.

visiting Thai family for 60 days. This can be applied on most of types of entris/extensions

being spouse for 1 year: This can be applied only when you are on entry stamp Non-O being married to a Thai or 1-year extension

there is only one visa for that. A non o 90 day visa, that you can either get outside Thailand or inside Thailand. When you already have that, and are stamped in on it, you won't get another one on top. There are just the extensions available then, unless you leave Thailand and get another 90 day visa.

Edit* or leave Thailand and come back on visa exempt or tourist visa. Then you can apply for a new in-country 90 day non o.

, (sorry, edited as I misread) the no not same those for an Non-O at the RTE/RTCG outside Thailand. Better to go to your local immigration office to get the latest requirement for a in-country visa.

This is a bit old general requirements from HQ. It may be able to give you rough idea. But the detailed ones are vary by immigration office. Also your nationalities could require additional documents.

you can apply for the 60 days visit family extension when the 90 day visa is close to running out, if you need more time to season the money.

if you want another initial 90 day non o, you will likely have to leave Thailand to get that. They won't sell you one on top of the one you already have. You have two options for in-country, and that is the one year extension which requires seasoning of money, or the single 60 day extension based on visiting family you can get per entry, to buy more time. You won't get another initial visa inside Thailand. That would have been an option if you were not already stamped in on one.

but there is no initial application because you already did that if you are now in possession of a 90 day non o. That IS the initial visa.

if you came in on a 90 day non o based on marriage, they are probably not going to sell you another one. They will expect you to apply for the one year extension based on that visa.
