Living in Bali (no Consulate here, only in Jakarta)

I want to stay in Thailand for 60-90 days

I am getting conflicting advice, what is the best way to go about it, please? What are the requirements? 

I saw somewhere that I can just enter with VOA (30 days) and apply for a Long Term Tourist Visa while I'm there in Thailand?

I also saw somewhere that I need to apply for a Tourist visa first.

Bit Confusing - Please help!

Your choices to stay in Thailand for 90days could be:

1: Get a Single Entry Tourist Visa at the Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate (Jakarta, your home country, or wherever you want), which gives you 60 days on entry. You can extend it for 30 days once.

2: Enter on visa-exempt without getting a proper visa in advance gives you 30 days on entry. You can extend it for 30 days once. After 60 days, get out of Thailand (by land border or air) and enter again on visa-exempt once more for 30 days.

, as I wrote, you can apply for 30 days tourism extension ONCE per entry. You cannot apply for an "additional 60 days".

You will go to the local immigration office where you stay when you want to apply for an extension.

, For entry to Thailand, You better have three-proofs-of (you may or may not be asked to show at the immigration):

Accommodation in Thailand (at least for the first several nights), onward travel within

days, funds of 20,000 THB or equivalent in cash.

Also, you may want to check with your air carrier if they let you board with the outbound ticket 60 days after or without a ticket when you don't have a valid visa to Thailand. (for further detail, ask your air carrier)

There is no possible way to get a tourist visa inside Thailand, tourist visas must be obtained outside the country.

Easiest option to stay maximum 90 days is to apply before you make your way to Thailand at the Thai Embassy for a Single Entry Tourist Visa. This visa will give you 60 days of stay on entry and can be extended once with another 30 days based on tourism.
