Details: I have held a yearly Thai Retirement Visa for over 6 years now. I extend it yearly. About 2 years ago the Patumthani Immigration Office added addition requirements after you have been issued the retirement visa which is you must go back to them after 3 months and show that you still have Baht 800K in your bank account and then 3 months after that you must show that you have at least Baht 400K in your bank. If you do not do this, your visa is automatically canceled. I have been doing this now for the last 2 years and it is getting to be a bit difficult to ensure I have Baht 800K in my bank after the 3 months of receiving my Retirement Visa. I am thinking about changing my visa to a Thai Marriage Visa since my Thai wife have been married for over 32 years. I heard that the requirement for this visa is a minimum of Baht 400K in the bank.
Question: My question is how easy would it be for me to switch over to a Marriage Visa from a Retirement Visa and are there any downsides of doing this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Switching from a Thai Retirement Visa to a Marriage Visa is generally considered easy. The process involves changing the visa's purpose during renewal, with specific requirements including proof of marriage and financial documentation. While some find the transition straightforward, others note the potential downsides, such as increased paperwork, the need for relationship verification, and possible home visits by immigration officers. Overall, the process may require more documentation compared to the renewal of a retirement visa.

I switched from retirement to marriage extension and I did it early ( February rather than August) because I wanted a more convenient anniversary date.

My immigration office is also Pathum Thani.. I can only info you of my dealings with Pathum Thani.
4 year's ago I wanted to change from O imm retirement visa to married visa.
Can not was the reply from immigration, they told me I had to leave Thailand and have my retirement O imm canceled then re-enter and apply for a new O imm based on married.
So I booked a flight to loas and came in on a 30 tourist visa.

Makes you wonder why we allow ourselves to go through all this painful process each year to be true.

I have nothing like that in my passport about showing the current balance. Just a slip to do a 90-day report.
For married to a Thai, for 1 year extension, min 40K deposit per month is required.
Can this transfer come from another Thailand bank account of a different person or it should be from overseas from our own account.
Also, after the deposit, can it be spent/withdrawn/transferred the same month ?
And, how about when applying for the 1 yr marriage extension the first time, should this transfer be done every month for 12 months before applying ?

I have lived in Thailand for 10 years and have spent the last 2 years in the Philippines to see the difference between these two countries. In Thailand one must have a pension of at least thb. 65'000 monthly or thb. 800,000 bank deposit or If you are married to a Thailady thb. 400'000in the bank. In the Philippines you can stay in the country for 3 years at a time without proof of money and without leaving the country. So a plus point for the Philippines as far as the visa is concerned. Furthermore, in the Philippines almost everyone speaks English, in contrast to Thailand. But here in Phuket I have great hospitals, great shopping facilities, very good internet connection, beautiful apartment buildings, good roads, good infrastructure, top mobile connections, beautiful beaches, good flight connections at home and abroad, etc. All these things are more than in the Philippines poor! Therefore, despite drawing the monthly pension statement of thb. 65'000 or deposit
thb. 800'000 Thailand before the Philippines. Thanks to this rule of Thai immigration, we've had virtually no foreign aliens loitering around here, unlike in the Philippines. Thank you Thailand! I love this country everyday more๐น๐ญโค
kinda confused... Is your point that Thailand or Phillipines is better... Or are you saying you love Thailand because the government have made life easier for you here because it's not as busy since the government have scared the tourists away ?๐ค๐
i am a filipino but to be honest i love thailand me and my husband stay there since pandemic . The only trouble is the language because not many thai people speak english but the food,people and hospitals is far better than philippines. This is because the government crocs thankfully now change abit . I miss thailand but now we are here in england because our kids is our priority to get a good school and free.

Andy Pinne I have never had any problems with my Visa in Thailand on Immigration! As I meet all Thai immigration requirements of proof of funds. But in the Philippines I was not even able to take my booked flight from Manila to Bangkok because the exit visa was not complete (according to Airport Immigration Manila). The immigration officer at Manila airport was stubborn, rude, bossy and merciless despite Covid19. Luckily I found very helpful immigration in Thailand.
My husband is a Philippino he prefers to live in Thailand more than Philippines and I as his Thai wife do not like that country at all . I hate the terrible traffic in Manila ,food ,environment and many dishonest people who like to take advantage and cheating about money. Since his brother passed away I have never been Philippines and never thought to go back this country again . We have deposited money 800,000 baht in Bank Account and never withdrawals to be only his bank guarantee. He has to report himself every 90 days and renew visa every April of the year and do re-enter visa for traveling. Those are all we do every years .He has lived in Bangkok for 10 years ,no any problems. We just try to accept ,understand and be patient with the immigration rules . We bought an another house in Mualek Saraburi near Big mountain for our summer house. Itโs very nice weather, good environment good food , good hospitals and neighborhood. We are staying in Mua lek for two weeks and go back Bkk having a big house and a condo in Bangkok . So we believed and can imagine how beautiful life you have in Phuket . Enjoy your life with good health and stay save from Covid 19.

To get the annual extension for the retirement Visa there are two other options: 65,000 bath monthly income on a Thai bank, or through an agency.
Those who do not understand why people live in Thailand are not only criticizing the life choices of a person they do not know, but also it's ununderstandable the reason why they are in this group.

>My question is how easy would it be for me to switch over to a Marriage Visa from a Retirement Visa?
It'll be very easy. You will have to do it when it's time to renew your visa though. You'll have to ask the immigration office what their specific requirements are, but expect the following requirements:
1. The applicantโs passport and a certified copy of:
a. The data โpictureโ page.
b. The in-country Non-O Visa Based on Retirement
c. The departure card (โTM. 6โ) that should be stapled in the passport.
2. The Extension of Stay Application Form (โTM. 7โ).
3. A copy of the submitted Notification of Residence of Foreigners form ("TM. 30โ).
4. The Thai spouse physically next to the applicant, and;
a. Their Thai ID card and a certified front and back copy of the ID card.
b. Their housebook, and a certified copy of the first page.
5. Proof of finances:
a. 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account, seasoned for two months, or;
b. 40,000 THB in income deposited into a bank account marked as an international transfer by the bank, or;
c. 40,000 THB in income from an employment contract with a work permit, or;
d. A letter from the embassy saying the applicant makes 40,000 THB or more a month in income.
Note: Female foreigners married to Thai males do not need to show proof of finances.
6. The original proof of marriage and a front and back copy of the proof of marriage, certified by both the husband and wife. Acceptable proof of marriages include:
a. The Thai marriage certificate issued inside Thailand, or;
b. A translated and certified copy of the foreign marriage, certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The certified copy is known as the Kor Ror 22.
7. An updated Kor Ror 2 confirming the marriage is current. This is acquired from the local amphur office for 20 THB, and at most amphur offices, only the Thai spouse can request this document.
8. Two passport sized (4cm by 6cm) photos.
9. 1,900 THB processing fee.
Different immigration offices have different requirements, and may include:
- A hand drawn map to the applicantโs residence.
- Recent pictures of the husband and wife in various locations in the residence.
- Rental contract, if applicable.
- Witnesses who are familiar with the couple and can verify they live together.
There is an under consideration period for this extension of stay. This may include an at-home visit by the immigration office to confirm the husband and wife are living together, interviews with neighbors, and if using the seasoned money method, to confirm the money is still in the bank account.
>and are there any downsides of doing this
None at all. You're just changing the reason for the extension of stay.

I think they are looking to scam you.. because you are allowed to use the 800k between visa renewals, as long as it is topped up a few months prior to extension... they just want people to come in extra so they can make a problem that a brown enveloped can fix... other offices don't do this for retirement visa

You guys should come up against my wife. The heavy artillery haha.
Andy *******
Omg... the king of out of context remarks... you said my words were untrue... I said you could use the 800k as long as you didn't drop below mandated minimum and top up months before renewal...
You then say I'm wrong because you can't touch it for the first 3 months after allocation... however I didn't say when, I said follow guidelines. But i was also speaking to the OP who said he had been told to keep 800k in bank continuously and to show for each of the 90 day reporting periods.
So, I have asked you to stop trying to look good, to just eat your words and fade away 3 times now... but you persist in trying to save face.... I've spent enough time on your childish need to be right, go prove yourself to someone else, stop acting like an enlightened twat and stop pleading the case and finding ways to masturbate your ego on me... I'm sorry for you that you can't cope, but life is full of disappointment for you then.. but you can be king of your own domain, you can fool weak minded nice people around you... But i see you for the precious little man you are with a need to be right and control and put down others.... and it doesn't impress me... your not even capable of controlling yourself when asked to stop 3 times... so for the last time... good bye little man... go play with someone else, go do something.. just stop annoying me with your pleading need to be right... your not... good bye ๐๐ ๐๐คฃ๐ ๐๐

on any given day .. but my discussion on 800k and dipping into it being allowable before topping the balance back up a few months before reapplying was dead right... if you are married to a Thai lady. and you have kids together. your kid can provide a visa for you. and you will need 400k in your bank. I'm not sure how much the minimum is for retirement - pension will need to be every month.

Is it ok to transfer
*****
baht into Thai account every month or does it have to show as an official pension payment

Normaly it only has to show "international transfer' as proof it comes from abroad.
Thailand's rules are a bit odd but fairly clear and straight forward. Just try to get into the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan, China, Taiwan and live there long term if you're an immigrant.
I do find it a bit odd, though, that marriage doesn't grant one citizenship, as with many other Western countries. But no doubt it was abused at one point, when a guy would pop over and marry the first girl he saw at the bar and then dump her as soon as he got his green papers...
, that living a very decent life in Thailand, costs FAR more less, then living in y'r (or mine) country. Almost half amount I think. But why you come here then ?
Iโm interested to hear from you what other countries are both more beautiful and easier to retire. Genuine question because I would be willing to explore

It requires more paperwork for the immigration office, so they might be willing to easy the BS on you.

Why not just move the เธฟ800,000 to a separate, interest bearing account (.05%) and leave it there, pretending like it doesnโt exist.
wouldnโt the monthly transfer only need to be 40K as he has a Thai spouse ?
Bobby ********
Eddie Hurst. For "married to a Thai" visa yes it is. However the OP was looking at his options. Many married people still prefer the retirement visa as the extension requirements are less arduous and time-consuming. Personally I need 45-50k per month to live anyway, so bumping up my monthly payment to 65k is no big deal.
For married to a Thai, you said min 40K deposit per month is required.
Can this transfer come from another Thailand bank account or it should be from overseas.
Also, after the deposit, can it be spent the same month ?
And, how about when applying for the 1 yr marriage extension the first time, should this transfer be done every month for 12 months before applying ?

Yash Arora. I'm not familiar with the "married to a Thai" conditions, as there are variations. For example, you can obtain a work permit and use your salary to satisfy the 40k conditions. I suggest you post your questions to the Thai visa advice group, and you will get a very comprehensive answer
Iโm not sure if I understand what youโre saying are you basically saying to transfer money from one bank account to another in your country to show a pension?
Bobby ********
Sam Stiltner. No, you have to transfer 65k from overseas into a Thai bank account, but unlike the 800k deposit, you can spend it as soon as you get it.
you're a fool if you don't think 23k usd is a lot of money to be just sitting in a dead account to satisfy visa requirements. You know the amount of money a good investor can turn that into? It's not that I can't afford it, rather than I'm much smarter with my money. And to answer your question, yes i can easily afford it, but I don't just let 20k sit around. My money is constantly working. I pull out the amount of money I need to live on at beginning of each month, and the rest goes to work, making me more money.
lol .05%. Yeah no thanks. I can turn it easily 10-20% on the market. But I fully understand that Thailand has rules, just hate tying up that kind of money, when it can be used so much wiser. Again this is just my opinion
not singular investments sir. I day trade individual stocks like AAL,CCL,DIDI &NIO, (plus other blue chips). This year I'm at 12.8 percent return. Would be higher, but took a dip due to Biden being a terrible president.
Bobby ********
Brook Powers. It's freedom of choice of course, but effectively it's money you'll never see again. Doing a transfer once a month takes five minutes, so you could say it's an hour of your time every year. By moving money to Thailand I would lose about $2000 AUD every year in interest. An hour's "work" for $2000 is too good a rate to pass up! What I make in interest easily pays for a decent health insurance plan.
Itโs easy to switch. Literally just change the reason from retirement to marriage to a Thai. Just that simple. I did the opposite this year. No questions asked.
The down side is the MASSIVE increase in paperwork, proof of relationship, home visit to verify your relationship, etc etc.
Iโve met people that are married 20+ years, renewing at the same office with the same people that whole time and every year being treated like itโs the first time they did it.
Thatโs the reason I switched from marriage to retirement. Last year in BKK it took 5-6 trips to CW to get it sorted. I said never again.
yes as i did, 2010 came in VOA, stayed for years and never once left to change visa typesโฆ all Visa works done inside Thailand
Chaing Rai visa office was very helpfulโฆ been back stateside 4 yrs nowโฆ no plans to get jabbed, no plans to do crazy isolation rulesโฆ CV19 survivor & until my natural immunity is recognized i will stay stateside.
