Hello. I got the 90 day visa based on marriage, but won’t be able to apply for the 9 month extension in time due to an issue outside my control. Do I need to cancel my current visa before I leave the country (like with an education visa)?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are holding a 90-day visa based on marriage and are unable to apply for a 9-month extension before your departure, there is no need to cancel your visa before leaving. You can remain in Thailand for the full duration of the 90 days. Once you leave the country, your current visa will automatically cancel without requiring any formal cancellation process.

Thank you. I did not know that was an option after the initial 90 days. I will check with immigration.

you most likely weren't on ANY Non-ED visa and instead you were on an 'extension of stay' for education. <-that has to be cancelled before you leave

BUT

seeing as you're on the initial 90 days of the Non-O visa you got, you're able to stay until that time runs out, then leaving with cancel the stamp without any need to go to the immigration office for anything

Once you leave the country without re entry permit, your current will automatically end

No

You leave which cancels your current Visa then start again either by purchasing a new Non-O before you return or getting one when you get back if you meet the financial requirements.

Nope there is nothing to cancel, you can stay the full 90 days that visa gives you.

Just so you know it wouldn't have been a 9 month extension it would have been a full year added to the expiration date of the 90 days you already have.

as he is Married to Thai, it may be possible to get the 60 day Family visit extension of stay at his local Thai Immigration office.

FYI I was in the same position as the OP, waiting for money to seed for two months, and I extended my 90 day by 60 days without any problem (at Krabi Immigration).
