Going to register my 4 mo. old baby's birth with the US embassy. I'm American and my wife is Thai. My wife and son will be traveling to America in the future. Do i (should I) need to apply for a US passport for him as well? He will be close to 1 year old when going to America. I didn't know if age played any part in this or not. Anyone go through this? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An American father seeks advice on registering his 4-month-old son's birth at the US embassy in Thailand and whether he needs to apply for a US passport before the child travels to America. Responses emphasize that after registering the birth, a passport application is necessary. Additional information on processes at the US embassy in Thailand is provided, including links for official guidance.
Once the baby is registered you will still need to apply for a passport which requires all the same documents. There is no requirement to register births overseas; getting a UK passport establishes citizenship.
Then I'd wait until you come to Thailand, then get his Thai and UK passports while you're here. Both are quite straightforward to do here. You'll need YOUR long-form birth certificate to get him a UK passport, so bring it with you to Thailand. Good luck.
Where are you now? He'll need a Thai passport to enter Thailand (if you're currently in the UK) but if you're in Thailand, he'll need a UK visa to enter the U.K. if he only has a Thai passport. I'd get both passports, wherever you are.

Hi Henry, thank you for that information.. we are thinking of obtaining a Thai passport first for him, then when I am back in Thailand we will apply in Bangkok for a uk passport? Does that work?

Tod do you have a link for registering a uk/Thai baby born in Thailand? Many thanks:)
Use a us passport ... save a lot of grief entering the US. Use his Thai passport coming back.

He will need a passport to travel outside Thailand. Try ThaiVisa for advice.

This is a Thai Visa advice, I can not help you with application for US passport. Please use google to find the US Embassy in Bangkok and get the information needed from them.
