TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, your son can apply for a 30-day extension on his 60-day visa stamp at the immigration office in Khon Kaen. The extension application is generally straightforward, requiring a fee of 2000 THB and possibly a TM30 notification if he is staying with you at a private residence. There are also alternative options, such as leaving the country briefly to re-enter with another 60-day stamp.
there however is no guarantee if he will be allowed a second visa exempt. It depends on his overall stamp history and the Immigration officer on duty. There were reports people have been refused entry trying to re-enter after having maxxed out their first visa exempt entry . . my recommendation is: be prepared and have a "plan B"
No issue at all, he's allowed to apply for one 30 day extension on his 60 day free entry stamp. If he's up in Khon Kaen with you he'd go to that office for the extension
This is a general list of what can be required for the 30 day extension. It is not office specific.
has anyone been warned about too many border bounces in a row

yep, warned and/or denied entry and turned back to the country they were trying to enter thaland from 😮
When they eliminated the 2 free visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year rule that did not mean it's unlimited. It meant that you are totally at the mercy of the officer at passport control on whether you get in or not
