My wife and I arrived Jan 13 on a 60 day E-visa from Canada. We applied online for the 66 days, but when we received confirmation email they granted 60 days. It is Tourist TR type, Travel - Single, Employment Prohibited

At customs we received a TR stamp with Mar 16 as final date.

We are trying to decide the best approach to fill in the extra time.

- Border bounce is not our preferred choice.

- We are considering a flight to Laos, but cost and time may be up there. We are doing some checking for flights and hotel

- can we go to Immigration here in Chiang Mai to request an extension on the tourist visa?

Is there any paperwork other than passport required at the airport on re-entry? Or do we just request an additional 30 days.

 you don't get the additional 30 days at the airport 😕 You get it at the IMMIGRATION OFFICE where you stay for 1900baht .

Just go to the immigration office at Central Festival Mall OR the main one by the Chiang Mai airport and apply for the 30 day extension.

You don't need to exit/re-enter, not at all

You have been given sound advice by MANY in your post.

There really is only one option which makes any sense.

It's a no brainer for you to go to the Thai immigration office and get the 30 days extension of stay for 1900 Thai baht.

Then you have options for staying longer.

Until then, we wish you success in whatever you really want to do.

 INSIDE the country you have one option, go to the immigration office and get a 1900baht 30 day extension..

OR

you exit/re-enter the country to get a new free 45 day entry stamp (which you can do by land by going to a border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in and out of another country and then stamp back in to thailand OR by air by flying out and back) <- BOTH those choices seem to be far more expensive and time consuming than just going to one of the immigration offices in Chiang Mai and getting the 30 day extension for 1900baht 🙂

No such thing as a 66 day Visa that is why they gave you 60 days.

Simply go to your local Thai immigration office and apply for the 30 days extension of stay. 1900 Thai baht.

Here's the common found requirements for the 30 days extension of stay.

And Chiang Mai Does REQUIRE a TM30 be filed as your registered address

 MANY owners do not file the TM30, fearing it will result in their having to pay Thai income tax and other licensing fees renting real estate

You can indeed get an extension at CM immigration. You’ll need to show a filed TM30. Ask your hotel or landlord for a copy of their filing.
