TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry is about whether a person with a 6-month Tourist visa (METV) can cross over at Chong Mek for a visa run. Community responses clarify that instead of a visa run, this action is referred to as a 'border bounce.' It is suggested to consider going to the Myanmar border for a quicker option. Additionally, the feasibility of the trip depends on the traveler's nationality, as some may require a visa for Laos.
depending on where they are in thailand it could be a LONG slog to a border with burma :/

Nationality of passport? Probably need Lao visa on arrival, cost varies with which country, but bring some USD ($30-35) for best price.

you're not going on a "visa run" because that's where you go to a thai consulate and BUY a visa :O , you're doing a border-bounce <-where you go to the border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and then stamp right back into thailand to get either a 30 day visa exempt entry OR like you another stamp on a valid visa. :)
I googled around and couldn't see any posts on the inter-web that said you can't border-bounce there although depending on your nationality you might have to buy a visa for Lao.
