Hi, I am asking for friends who will come to live here next year. If the husband applies for a retirement visa, may the wife and child be attached to this visa? Wife is 42yr and child 10yr. They are being told at their country of residents the wife cannot. However I remember that this is how we were living here 6 years ago (we have since changed this, so I no longer know). Thanks for any info.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a retirement visa in Thailand, the husband can secure this type of visa, but his wife and child cannot be directly attached to it. They will need to apply for 90-day Non-O visas as dependents before arriving in Thailand. The wife can also explore options like an educational (ED) visa for the child by enrolling them in school, and applying for an O guardian visa concurrently. Additionally, if both spouses are over 50, one can apply for a Non-O visa as a trailing spouse, while the other must apply for their visa category based on age.

IF the spouse of a retirement visa holder doesn't come in on a non-O visa that they got from a consulate BEFORE they come here they cannot get that 90 day Non-O visa issued inside the country based on being the trailing spouse of a person on a retirement visa. It's one of the only reasons they will NOT issue a Non-O visa in country on

Now, before I begin the lesson, will those of you who are playing in the match this afternoon move your clothes down onto the lower peg immediately after lunch, before you write your letter home, if you're not getting your hair cut, unless you've got a younger brother who is going out this weekend as the guest of another boy, in which case, collect his note before lunch, put it in your letter after you've had your hair cut, and make sure he moves your clothes down onto the lower peg for you.

And if both are over 50, do they both need retirement visa, or can one just get non O based on the spouse? Thanks
No, as long as you can prove you are married (as legal and recognizable in Thailand), one can be piggy-bagging to the partner even both of you are over 50.
that is great to hear as assumed once 50 you need individual finances to prove. Wonderful news!

Pro Tip:
NEVER EVER trust an embassy worker at a thai consulate outside the country on anything to do with an extension inside thailand
AND
NEVER EVER trust an immigration officer at an immigration office inside the country on anything to do with a visa outside the country
They are two completely different government offices and have nothing to do with one another

The wife and child would BOTH get 90 day Non-O visas OUTSIDE the country before they wing their way here because a 90 day Non-O visa for being a "trailing spouse" based on marriage to a foreigner is not issued inside the country.
You're a year away from them wanting to come so all they can do is read the requirements on the thai consulate in the country they're in.
correct, the financial requirements are met by the spouse holding the "retirement visa" and the 90 day Non-O's are issued for being immediate family members with proof of relationship
