Hey all, How much cash is best to arrive with, keep safely, while planning to open a Thai account for a 2 month stay?

I have heard a lot about needing 20,000 baht single/40,000 baht per family in cash on arrival when entering Thailand. My husband, son, and I are flying to Thailand from Vientiane today. The ATMs here in Vientiane only allow a withdrawal of 2,000,000 KIP. Thank you for any advice you can give.
