Why would my dependency visa only be issued for 3 months instead of a year?

DEPENDENCY VISA ADVICE

Hi, I hope some of you can help. I have just applied for a dependency following my husband who is a teacher here. I was told to come back to receive my stamp in 3 weeks, once it has been processed.

A few days later the visa assistant who is helping me has said that I may only be a 3 month visa I receive. That I would then have to put through all the same paperwork again to apply for a 1 year visa.

I am just unfamiliar with this. Can anyone tell why this would be?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has applied for a dependency visa in Thailand following her husband's employment and was initially informed that she would receive a visa stamp in three weeks. However, she was later told that the visa granted could only be valid for three months, requiring her to reapply for a one-year extension thereafter. A comment explains that the initial visa is typically a 90-day non-immigration visa, and she cannot apply for the one-year extension until she is on the correct visa type, meaning she would have to wait a year to apply for the extension alongside her husband.

That's because you must first convert to the non-immigration visa. A visa is for 90 days. After that you can then apply for the 1-year extension (which will actually only last for as long as your husband's extension). You can not immediately apply for the extension if you are not already on the correct visa type.

Next year and each following year you will then be able to apply for the 1-year extension along with your husband.

ah I understand, that makes sense. The schools Visa assistant had said I'd get 1 year but she is quite new to the job so must have just got wires crossed. Thanks for clearing that up.
