Hello all, 

I just had a question about where I might find a relatively hassle-free and or "chill" place to apply for a tourist visa. I'm currently in Thailand on a 30 day stamp (just arrived after 9 months back home). I'm just trying to avoid expensive locations or places where the consulate is difficult to get to. I'd also like to avoid potentially problematic officers, for example I've heard Cambodia is not the easiest to deal with.  

My plan was to ride out my 30 day stamp and then fly somewhere nearby. Get a tourist visa, ride out that for 60 days then extend 30 days and leave. My tourist visa's initial 60 days should expire about 3 weeks before I head back to america. My return ticket is already booked.  So I just planned to extend for 30 days and leave about a week before the extension expires. I'm hoping the immigration officers won't ask me for a ticket out based on the  first 60 days in the country  considering I'll be heading back to the States not long after that. Is this something I'm likely to deal with?

I have never been asked for one before but I also haven't had a tourist visa in about 5 years.

as mentioned this is not a travel advice page. Yes, I agree Penang is nice by train, or go Savannakhet by bus, or Vientiane by plane and bus, or cheap flight to KL, or Singapore. Go to HCMC for sightseeing next to your visa run, or London, Amsterdam etc etc, So many places to name as nice places to visit.

Why not extend the stamp you have for30 days leave and come back for 30 and extend that??

I second this suggestion. You're here on a 30 day visa exempt entry, why not extend that by 30 days at your local immigration office THEN either border bounce, for a new 30 day visa exempt entry (which you could also extend for 30 days at the immigration office) OR go to a thai consulate and buy a single entry tourist visa

Consider your budget, know the locations of Thai Embassies and Consulates, check transit options and hotel prices...go where you might see something different with the required documents and try to travel back in at a land border.

Also, make sure the embassy or consulate is open on the dates you want to go and if an appointment must be made prior for a specific date.

Every Thai Consulate is a chill out place, IF you are prepared and have all the copies as mentioned in the requirements. Every location is expensive if you decide to sleep in 5 star hotels, but every place is cheap if you bring your carton box and sleep under a bridge, there are hotels for all kinds of budget in between, we are not a tourist information page, for that use google. You plan sounds nice, but we can not tell what an Immigration Officer will say. Your plan sounds like a nice holiday, good luck.

I don't think this group is for "tourist" advice. It all depends on your prior visa history. All are easy. To enter, I suggest a land border to minimize the likelihood of being rejected.

Try Saigon, nice place to "explore" and the consulate there is walk in and pretty trouble free ... in my personal experience.
