What's the latest on the Thai Consulate in KL giving non-o visas for volunteers (with 1yr work permits and letter of recommendation from foundation)? Do they do multiple entry non-o's there? Or just 90day single entry non-o?

Single entry 90 Day Non-O visas only. You apply for a year extension at the immigration office in your area once you come back.

I'd say meet the requirements on this hand out from the thai consulate in KL and you should be fine.
