Just an update, received my visa extension today in Korat imm. 4hrs including 1.5 hrs for lunch. Couple of problem applications held up the process. 1 couple was at the counter for an hour and still had to go get something. That's the way it is sometimes I suppose. No hard feelings. Just advice Get Everything in order before turning up. Plenty of advice out there including this forum.

I saw an American at the desk outside there for 2.5 hours because he had nothing prepared for whatever he was doing. Later inside he lost his temper with the officer and was thrown out by two police.

Today? Immigration Chiang Rai was closed for the public holiday.

That's a regional holiday. Schools were also closed in Chiang Rai. But the passport office was open (I had a Thai friend who went to get theirs today).

turns out it's even simpler than this- the Chiang Rai office moved but didn't take down the signage or leave a note for dumb people like me. So the office I went to was closed AND it was a school holiday and there was no connection.

so it seems- I had stopped going to the one by the other government offices and was driving to Mae Sai instead, but decided to "do it the easy way" without knowing they moved. It's definitely not common knowledge yet as other people showed up while we were there and also assumed the holiday must be the reason.
