I searched posts but could not find the process. Asking for a friend (Aust passport) who has a visa based on retirement that requires extension renewal in January 2019. 

He will be travelling from August 2018 to March 2019 and not entering Australia. When he returns to Thailand I assume he can he enter on Tourist exempt. 

What is the simplist process then to return to retirement visa without returning to Australia?

Jim James He's leaving the country in August (5 months before his extension expires) and not returning until March (more than a month after his extension expires.

Most offices allow you to do it 30 days before your expiration date.

Why not renew the existing one before leaving. Ok he loses some time but I'd think more simple and,cheaper too..!

It is the same requirements, only the money does not have to be seasoned but need proof of coming abroad. And you need at least 15 or 21 days of Admitted to Stay depending on Immigration office you use.
