TLDR : Answer Summary
The longest tourist visa available for US citizens is the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) which allows for a total stay of up to 9 months. This is achievable by entering Thailand multiple times, as each entry provides a 60-day stay, with the possibility of extending for an additional 30 days. To apply for the METV, you must meet certain requirements including having a bank statement showing at least $7,000 for the previous six months and a letter of employment. The application fee is approximately $200.
Good luck getting your Tourist Visa...Single or METV.

An METV is valid for entry for 6 months from date of issue. On each entry during that period, you will receive a Permission to Stay of 60 days - but, you can apply for a one time extension of an additional 30 days for EACH of those entries, thus getting a 90 day stay if you so choose.

and I think now you know that the longest tourist visa you can get is a 6 month METV and with it you can get almost 9 months of stay (in 60 day increments).
You get it from a thai consulate in your country BEFORE you wing your way here. Check the website of the thai consulate you'd be using and look at the requirements. Most require at least 7K US in a bank account (some want it in there for 6 months before you apply, some only require it in there on the date you apply)

Read your Edit. It'll be a multiple entry tourist visa, which if used correctly, can let you stay for 9 months if I remember correctly. To get it:
1. You'll need a bank statement showing 7K USD for the prior 6 months
2. Letter of employment
3. It will cost $200 and will be valid for six months starting on the date it is issued.
