I am currently in Thailand on an OA visa for 12 months which going forward I am using as a measure of : Do I wish to live here all of the time or do I wish to split my time between Thailand and the UK ? I'm now decided that I would like to spend approx 5 months in Thailand between November and April  thus avoiding the UK winter season. Which visa would best allow me to achieve this?

Or can you let the visa expire each year and apply again at home, thus negating the financial requirements in Thailand ?

You can always go back and get a new Non-O-A visa from the thai consulate in your country. I know people who've been here more than 10 years on O-A visas going back and getting a new one every other year.

And this is where the insurance will become a burden. Can you insure for just the period of time you are in Thailand? And to meet the financial terms in the second year extension you will either have to deposit 800k or continue to deposit 65k + per month whether in Thailand or at home, am I correct?

as for your insurance question, no one knows what's what yet.

you are confusing getting a year long ENTRY STAMP from the VISA (like you do when you get that free second year) with getting a yearly extension of stay at the immigration office (which you wouldn't do until the second year runs out. That's when you meet the proof of funds.

The Non Immigrant O-A visa which gives you 1 year of stay each entry, this if you change your mind and like to stay a little longer. There is no other visa that gives you 5 months of stay, the longest option is 90 days

An O-A visa is still your best bet. There's no other visa that will give you 5 trouble free months in thailand without any extensions or border runs
