TLDR : Answer Summary
To legally purchase and register a scooter in Thailand after receiving your DTV, you'll need a residence certificate and passport. The dealership typically assists with registration and insurance. If you plan on driving, ensure you have an international motorcycle driver's license, as you'll need to convert or obtain a Thai motorcycle license after three months. Be aware that waiting times for obtaining a Thai license can be long.

Be careful with the term scooter, the real name is motorcycle, and you need to have ( interntional ) MOTORCYCLE drivers license to drive legally.

Not the right drivers license = no insurance pay-out, and have to pay other parts expences too.

If you have a international drivers license, it only cover the first 3 month, then you have to get a Thai license, and be aware that waitinglist can be long

i also read about the 3 month IDP thing but that was rumors in a forum. i tried hard to find a law that explicitly states this and there is none. the law is very general and only states that you need a valid license which an IDP (1 or 3 years) would be in combination with your home license.

depending on the location its a very fast process to get your thai licenses. and super cheap as well

It’s one of the international premisses of the IDP, so it is 3 months in all the countrys where you can use the IDP.

Check eventually your own country, if they permit the same type of IDP ( There are 2 versions, depending on where you go )

Often there is 2 -3 months waiting time for a driving test, around the most popular touristdestinations.

There is a peculiarity with Thai driver license, that you can’t get it, if you are colorblind !

All you need is residence certificate and passport to legally get it in your name. The dealership should take it get it all settled from there

The dealer should help you with registration and minimum insurance you'll definitely need a residency certificate wich you can get easy at local amphoe office where you live.

License wise depends on what cc you may need a motorcycle license wich again is easy to get of you already have one on your home country.

Or use an agent have the license part done in a day you'll still have to take a few easy tests and spend about an hour to get the license .
