TLDR : Answer Summary
A new teacher from Wales recently obtained a work permit (WP) and is expecting his Non-B visa soon. The process seems unusual since typically, one must secure a Non-B visa prior to getting a work permit. Some community members discuss possible scenarios that might explain this situation, including special procedures for teachers in Thailand and the possibility of having prior documentation from another school.
A) Pulled him-herself out of amnesty with an embassy letter.
Work Permit was issued once the 30 day extension was on the passport (only possible because the Ministry of Education has been given that option for teachers and students). And with the WP done, then apply for a change of status to a NON-B based on the Ministry of Education's recent special permit.
B) This person had an expired NON-B from another school or job. Got that extended w embassy letter and then follow the same steps as case A

We were told once on the embassy letter you cannot apply for anything else, you are "wanting to leave but cant"
i can tell u from multiple friends that isn't the case.
Of course it always comes down to "we were told" (not ur fault of course).
Different people, facebook members, Immigration officers, agents.... will all have a different answer.
The embassy letter is an extension of stay.
For what reason... doesnt matter.
Its a hard stamp that gives u evidence and proof of legal status.
I have many friends who used it cuz they needed an extra week or few weeks for their NON-ED or NON-O visas to come through.
The change of visa status goes under consideration for 2-3 weeks... so they applied to the 30 day extension w consulate letter... to buy themselves a month so they can sort the other visa out.
Anyway... just some ideas and info of people who did it.
If someone says they cant... for sure they won't. That doesnt mean someone else might or might not be able to do it.

I thought you had to get Non-B then you get the WP? Do you mean the WP letter that you take to get Non-B - then you take the Non-B and get full WP?
