Looking to return to Thailand, in November. Last time got a 60 day tourist visa and extended my stay by 30 days. I am looking to stay again with my girl friend. The visa rules have now changed, I am looking to return using a 60 day tourist exemption and like last time getting the exemption by 30 days. 

My queries are:

Do I need an invitation letter from my girlfriend re accommodation? Just book my flights and go and show IO invitation letter and return flight ticket along with proof of 20000Baht.

last time I booked flight for full 90 days, knowing I was extending my stay. Is this still okay??? 

Or will I have to apply for a 60day tourist visa + 30day extension

You can just come and get a 60 days visa exemption upon arrival which you also can apply for a 30 days extension on at your local immigration, the same way as with your tourist visa.

Formally you’ll need proof of funds and accommodation, but this is rarely checked in the immigration.

Your only issue is that a visa exemption formally requires an onward ticket within the initial 60 days even though you can apply for an extension. This is rarely checked in the immigration, but your airline might require proof of onward ticket before boarding. I suggest you call your airline and ask for their policy regarding this and/or buy a cheap onward ticket to a nearby destination.
