TLDR : Answer Summary
The claim that individuals aged 66 cannot obtain an education visa in Thailand holds some truth. In certain provinces, immigration officials may prefer that seniors apply for a retirement visa instead, which is deemed easier to obtain. Additionally, it's noted that individuals on a retirement visa are still permitted to study.

Retirement visa is easier than ED visa, and you can still study on retirement visa

I am in the same situation but only 54. I would love to do a retirement visa when I return to Thailand this coming summer because I do want to learn the language and can’t afford the retirement requirements yet. Some institutions won’t accept students over 50

I have looked into them

I know a few people over 50 who have gone there

Have you tried Duke in Soi 13?

I don’t need to deposit any funds on a retirement visa so the ED visa is more practical plus I want to learn the language anyway

We've had similar reports in the past from some areas. The immigration in some provinces wants you to get a retirement visa if you're old enough to do so.
