I will apply for a Non-O based on marriage at Savannakhet. I am currently on Ed Visa Extension (got original ED visa in Savannakhet, currently on 1st extension). I have 2 extensions left on the ED, but I will cancel ED visa at local immigration office. Is there any problem with this plan?

And I think on that note we're done. :/ I can't think of anything beneficial comin' out of leaving this thread open.

My advice would be GET MARRIED (as in register your marriage at an Amphur so you are legally married in the eyez of the thaiz) THEN go to the immigration office to get the hand out for the requirements to get a yearly extension of stay based on marriage (photos, maps, documentation, etc) THEN compile that documentation, get the letter from your school stating you are stopping studying on xx date, go cancel the ED extension and apply for a new one based on marriage right then.

Sorry I just want to confirm it is NOT possible to simply convert an ED extension to an extension based on marriage, inside of Thailand (Chiang Mai). Thanks.

thanks I appreciate your concern. we've been together 7 years, got kids etc., just tying the knot officially. yes laos is closer than the USA. i will go tomorrow to check at immigration about changing extension type.

Tod yes I can have the school put ANY date for the end of study (the current extension ends on January 19). I will get the marriage certificate on January 7. I can get bank letter showing 40k deposits for last 12 months, and all my wife's documents. This will save me a long trip to Laos. I am going to go with my wife to Chiang Mai immigration and ask tomorrow morning. Hopefully they will confirm.

and did you have the paperwork from your school stating you were stopping studying on xxx date so you could cancel your extension based on education? AND did you have all the paperwork needed to apply right at that instant for a year long extension of stay based on marriage?

The reason I'm asking is all you're doing is changing the reason for the extension from education to marriage (and you CAN change reasons)..

make SURE you cancel that ED visa extension at the immigration office before you leave the country. Just stamping out doesn't officially cancel it.
