TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus among respondents is that it is not possible to convert an OA (O-A) retirement visa to a Non-O visa while remaining in Thailand. This stems from the regulation that prevents switching between Non-Immigrant visa types (such as OA to O) within the country. Instead, individuals must exit Thailand and re-enter on the desired visa. For further details, it is advisable to refer to related discussions or official immigration guidelines.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.
you will still have to leave the country, (without a re-entry permit) which will get you OFF the OA extension, and then come back in on a 30 day visa exempt and THEN apply at your immigration office for the 90 day Non-O and then the year extension
you can do it by air or land (land borders wtih all countries except burma are open) BUT remember you need an approved thai pass to get back in and you need to show 10K USD in health insurance for 30 days
You CANNOT change an OA visa entry stamp to an O visa inside the country period end of story,
You cannot go from a Non-Immigrant type visa (like an OA) to another Non-Immigrant type visa (like an O)
So how about we ask you if you're on a year entry stamp from an OA visa OR if you are on a yearly extension that you got at the immigration office from an OA visa entry?
I'm not married Tod it's going to break the chain and apply here for the O visa. Just hope its straight forward . again many thanks for your reply.

The information I posted is accurate and how it could be done in country IF you're married to a thai, if you're not there is no in coutnry way to do it, you'd have to exit/re-enter to "break the chain of stamps back to the OA visa" so you could start over

Okay so on a year extension based on previously having an OA visa the only way to do it is you have to exit the country, and either buy a single entry Non-O visa at a thai consulate before you come back
OR
come back on a visa exempt/tourist visa entry and then apply for a NEW 90 day Non-O visa at the immigration office inside thailand for 2000baht
honestly IF I knew I had the 800K already in the bank ready to go, I'd just come back visa exempt and high tail it roght over to the immigration office and apply for the in country Non-O visa for 2000baht
I wouldn't even screw around with getting the 90 day Non-O at a thai consulate or even a tourist visa I'd just bounce out and back in to wipe the slate clean, get on a 30 day stamp and go from there.
I mean worst case he comes in visa exempt, can't get it together fast enough and has to take the one 30 day extension you're allowed for 1900baht to by more time, that's 2 months and should be more than enough time
I'm planning also to finish the O-A . So I'm leaving for holidays in Germany and I will come back on Non-O visa and then applying for extension based income/affidavit here in Phuket.
ahh that's different if you can snap up a single entry 90 day Non-O in your country before you come back (and it's not too much hoop jumping) that's the way to go because you cut 2 steps out of the whole process (applying for the in coutnry Non-0 and then going back to get it inked in after the review period).
BUT
If someone is doing it around here in S/E Asia, especially if they meet the requirements already, I'd say just bounce out and back in on a 30 day visa exempt entry and get after it
